    Default Video Card

Hey all, I'm looking for a good upgrade on my graphics card for under $100 because I'm afraid of having a horrible framerate...

    Currently I have a Nvidia Gforce 8600gts

I prefer not to use ATI cards

    Any suggestions are very welcome!

Don't listen to the people saying you need a complete upgrade, for rift your PC is fine. I'd recommend probably something between the 9800 GTS and the 400 series.. perhaps a GTS 250 at max. Your CPU will probably cause a bottleneck if you go any higher.

"good" and "under $100" don't really go together when talking about gaming. The closest you can get, and the lowest I'd recommend, would be an XFX 5770 at $125 post-rebate. (Or a Sapphire 5770 at $110 if you don't mind a limited warantee.)

Good meaning not UBER, I have no intentions on running the game on ULTRA I just want to play on medium and have a framerate between around 40-60

well some people's idea of good vary.. for some "good" means 1920x1200 @ 60fps with all the goodies.. others it means being able to play a game at 20+ FPS at 1 Megapixel (1280x1024, 1440x900) and understanding they might not have AA, spell effects etc.. that being said I think there is quite a bit of room in and around the $100 mark..

5770s can often be found for @ $100 (HIS, Sapphire etc), a GTS 450 runs about the same cost though a tad slower and the 5750 is often overlooked but about as capable as a 5770 using ATI overdrive auto overclocking.. the HD4850 is another "older" card that is "good" for many as well as the GTS 250 (8800/9800 relabeled). I guess the main "issue" with the 5750 isn't it's performance per say, it's that for about the same price you can easily get a 5770 with 10-15% more performance (@ 30fps, thats +4.5fps).

well im sure your cpu would probably bottleneck you from going ultra, but i am currently running it on ultra with 40-60 fps, and i use the 5770, mind you slightly overclocked, but since its so easy to overlcock the 5770, why wouldnt you?

My only hesitation is I have had a horrible time with ATI cards in the past is this a really good card?

I just found this from microcenter

    http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0350276

    EVGA GeForce GT 430

Do you all think with this I could run on medium settings at about 40-60 fps?

I'd say you'd be lucky if it ran it at low at 1-5 FPS.

Don't want to hijack but I don't want to make a new thread. I have the same question. I have been using Nvidia for the past few years, 8800GT and GTS250, and I would like to get a new video card for this build I made last October:

    -AMD Phenom II X4 965
    -Biostar TA890FXE
-Wintec 4GB of DDR3 1333 (had 8GB but one stick went bad, sending to manufacturer)
-Galaxy Geforce GTS250 512MB (previous build)
    -Ultra 650W PSU
    -WD 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6
    -Windows 7 64-Bit

The GTS 250 has speed but I'm pretty sure that the 512MB is what is holding me back. I get 40 FPS on Ultra, but during invasions it drops drastically.

At the moment I've been looking at the new Radeon HD 6870s and they look really good for $250. I'd like to keep $250 - $300 a limit.
