Default Intel Core i7 740QM(1.73GHz) Laptop, How will it perform with RIFT

With the impending release of RIFT, and the impeding student loan refund I'm getting, I've been looking into getting a gaming laptop. I've been eyeing this

My only worry is the low clock speed, Though I did some research and it seems it's able to boost up a single core up to around 3 ghz, still I'm wondering if this will be an effective laptop for gaming.

don't get the JW model. Instead wait and get the SW model in a bit when it is back on shelves.

or go to www.xoticpc.com and get a sager.

I'm checking out the Sager, and I've found another laptop for about the same price, (my price range is about $1,400-ish.

I'm not sure which is better for the price, the Sager, or the Asus

the sager is, but XoticPC has it cheaper if you can use cash (paypal e-check counts as cash) 1347 cash.

no one has the sagers in stock. Due to the intel sandy bridge bug. They are delayed until March. I would wait for it though it is a huge boost over the gen 1 chips especially in laptops.

Less powerful than the not released Sager, but this one is actually out right now, and includes Blu-ray (don't see it on NewEgg) - Asus G73JH-X5 $1330. Something to consider.

No its not worth considering. The sager was released and it was recalled with the sandy bridge recall.

The jump from the i7-740 to the i7-2630 is over 50% increase in performance. Waiting 3 weeks for that kind of performance jump for a little under 100 dollars is very worth it.

Mine has the same processor and RAM. My video card has slower Video RAM. I get about 43 fps at 1600x900 with everything maxxed except AA and Shadows off.

Running minor research on my phone... Core i7-2630QM vs. Core i7-740QM shows closer to a 40% change in 3dMark Vantage points. Which is not a +40% FPS increase. Maybe tomorrow not on my phone I'll run some checks to see the FPS gain.

And according to my calculator 1480 - 1330 is greater than 100, not less. That and adding $150 for Blu-ray sets the difference at $300, a fairly substantial number.

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?...QM+%40+1.87GHz The i7-840QM

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?...QM+%40+2.30GHz The i7-2820QM

That is over a 50% increase in CPU power. I could search more and find the 740 -> 2630, but you can find it for yourself.

Even if it is 200-300 dollars I'd still spend that on a 50% or close to it increase in CPU power.

Those links don't show the Core i7-740qm, so I've no clue how those prove your point. Nor do they show FPS at all.

You can also add double the ram, double the hd size, and EAX to the Asus. Even if we give just 50 to each that pushes the difference to a further $450 variance.

You may discount all those features in favor of more CPU power, but me, I'll just reference them and let others decide for themselves.

How does it perform during RIFT events with a lot of things on screen, I can get my current rig to up to 50fps just standing around but during rifts I hit about 15 fps

This is on low settings, and a res of 1680X1080
