    Exclamation Rift Launcher/Patcher messing up

Hi. I bought Rift on the 10th oif April at around 10 Am UK time and subscribed to the 6 month contract.
After doing all that, i pressed play on my steam, and it went through the normal firt time initialization steps and then the launcher popped up.
I put in my email and password and authenticator number and then it went to the next step. I had to update the game so i pressed update and what do i get?
Nothing. I get no sign of any downloading or movement of the pregress bar. It just hangs there forever. I even let the patcher stay up for the whole night and i got nothing out of it. I have tried verifying cache, defragmenting, uninstall reinstall, restart my Laptop, allowed full access through my firewall, opened ports, etc... now i am kind of fed up.
Can someone help me out please?

I have got Fibre optic broadband with speeds up to 50mb/s and download speed of 4.5mb/s

and my Laptop specs are as followed:
    ASUS G73JH-A2
    i7 820QM
    1TB 7200PPRM HDD
    16GB 1333MHz Ram
    ATi Mobility Radeon HD5870

I have all drivers up to date.

Also, one thing i have noticed is that, after i close the patch downloader/patcher/updater because nothing is happening visualy, i have to force quit it because it won't respond to my quit command. When i run verfy game cache, it says that i have a few files missing and steam will download them and still i get nothing at all.

Norton 360, but launcher and game allowed to go throug firewall. And in any case i tried to switch it off - the same situation. I tried to download client and then recover it in launcher. Launcher just doing nothing without any errors.

Norton is terrible software. Try this

    1) Click on Start button
    2) Click the Run option (use search bar under All Programs for Win7)
    3) Type in msconfig in the command prompt window
    4) In the System Configuration window, click on the Startup tab.
    5) Click the Disable all button.
    6) Click on the Services tab.
    7) Click on the checkbox next to "Hide all Microsoft services", which will remove all of the Microsoft services from the Services list.
    8) Click on the Disable all button.
    9) Click OK and restart your computer

Now try to run. You could possibly have something in the background running which is having a fit with your RIFT client. Post results please
