Default Gadgets- If unit exists, then target @unit, else do nothing

Just wondering if this is possible somehow.

I'm not an addon developer, but I do understand code a bit.
What I want to do is edit the macro settings in the addon Gadgets, within the provided UI.
Currently the unit frames are interactive even when they're empty, which means I have a bunch of invisible boxes on my screen where I can't click through to turn my character or camera.

I noticed however that if I delete the text from the left click and right click options, then the frames become non-interactive. I was wondering if there's a way to just do this when there's no unit selected, and when there is a unit selected, then left/right click works as normal.

Here's an example from a screenshot taken from the curse website

Based on what this is saying.. Nothing can be done because while in combat, the frame enters "Secure mode".

    What exactly is Secure Mode?

Secure Mode basically means that the player is "in combat" and the rift API limits some functions of frames to prevent players from making automated bot addons.

So you're saying there's nothing that can be done? Weren't the frames click-through if there was no unit to show in previous versions? Can anybody tell me what version of the gadgets addon had the click-through option available so I can use that version instead?

The responses I've gotten so far regarding this issue have just been uninformative.

    A satisfactory response would be..
"This can't be done because of XYZ reasons, and there is simply no way around it, click through frames is completely impossible because Z. And it will not happen unless Trion fixes X (never gonna happen because Trion doesn't care about UI or API)"

    Or..
"This is entirely possible, blah blah blah, edit lines 123 in file AB & C. It might show up in the next version"

I'm just saying because you essentially just repeated my question in the form of an answer.

I know what secure mode is in a nutshell and why it exists. I'm asking for more specific info, like which functions are limited etc.

sorry I misread your question. I'm sure there is a list somewhere but this is the most detailed description I could find: http://wiki.riftui.com/Frame:SetSecureMode()

Although to answer you plainly, If securemode is what's stopping you then there is absolutely nothing you can do to get around it and it won't be changed in the future.

However, it may be possible to modify the gadget addon in such a way that unit frame click-boxes get removed when not in use, but only out of combat. These frames are required to be in secure mode for click macro stuff to work and you can't change secure frames while in combat.

The main problem with this functionality, and probably why the author didn't include it, is that if you are in combat and then join a group (eg zone event/public group) then your click boxes won't work until you leave combat.
