Addon Request: Consolidated

One thing to get straight here, everyone asking for specific addons from WoW need to realize that those addons are COPYRIGHT to those authors so no one is going to be able to do a direct port, only the authors of said addons can do that. So in light of this bit of "forgotten" knowledge, here is the basic summary of addon requests in general catagories:

"Shouldn't" != "Can't"

If the API supports similar functions I would definitely port an addon directly. I don't care about your copyright at all.

True. Just pointing out that it's not really an obstacle anyway. No one is going to sue over the code they wrote for free and receive little to no money from.

Yes, people are definitely going to hire a lawyer to defend their code that's worth some pocket change.

And I don't particularly care about hosting, if I ported something, it would be because it's an addon I use. I'm not trying to take credit for someone else's work, I'm just lazy.

While the major ones aren't, most addons aren't major. WoWmatrix hosted plenty of addons, and I believe they required the GPL license to be listed on Wowmatrix.

ummm....so since the code is open source and there's no copyright for wow addons because blizzard owned the coding, and intellectual property (ok who would care because i bet there's 10-15 people that can produce the same product). Why are you posting this thread? I mean it's great and all, but it's not needed and if some one really wanted to they could go copy an addon and put it into rift and no1 could do anything about it.

Varno: To make a very long story short: If you are THAT clueless about intellectual property, please just don't post anything but questions.

Blizzard does not own addon code. They own the only environment in which it can run unmodified, but that doesn't mean they own it. They don't own the addon code any more than Microsoft owns RIFT for the same reasons.

I'm not denying the fact that someone could, in theory, file a lawsuit. I'm just saying that they won't, because it's entirely not worth the time/money.

I would like to see an addon like

Chat Sounds from WOW.

It allowed you to custom apply sounds to various chats in your chat window; like group, guild, tell, raids and such. The current chat sound for tells in the game is even barely noticeable.
