Well one is coming to Faeblight.
Best way to not break immersion is to not use voice. Not why the guild was started but still, could be good for RP.

Genuinely curious: why no Ventrilo*?
What do you feel it detracts from your game experience?
*Unless the answer is "Because we use Mumble" in which case the answer is obvious; you've found a superior product.

Read the Recruitment Thread. We use no voice. Some of us can't others don't want to. And while we could find acceptance in a guild that uses voice, pure text talkers can get ignored. So we go purely without voice.
And it is a brand spanking new guild, we just started it a few hours ago.

Best of luck to you! I'm not against using ventrilo personally. I just hate when guilds use it for nearly all communication. All that is left in the guild chat channel is item links or random statements and the people not on vent are left to wonder what is going on. I don't mind using ventrilo to coordinate in dungeons, raids, or pvp ... but for general everyday chatting with guildies, I prefer typing.
♥ if you say 'plz' because it's shorter than 'please', then I'll say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes' ♥
Mumble is a VOIP client, similar to Ventrilo, but which provides better audio quality at a lower level of network usage and with lower latency.
It does this through some excellent algorithms that it uses. Additionally, part of the setup process for Mumble requires going through a tuning process where it learns what the general tones and volume of your voice is while speaking into your mic, meaning that it takes steps to automatically tune out anything outside your normal vocal range (music, screaming kids, TV) as well as actively normalize your volume (meaning that when someone who's normally just the right volume screams, it doesn't destroy your ears).
Like I said, flat out better product. Also still free for the client download, just like Vent is.
I'd generally agree with this sentiment. When soloing or doing trivial content (basically, anything that's not a raid or organized PVP), I prefer to listen to Pandora over VOIP solutions. However, I don't eschew them totally; I definitely recognize that used within their place, VOIP can be very helpful.
I can understand why people who are accustomed to playing games that are more twitch based (FPSes, for example) would find VOIP a natural fit, and would desire to continue that experience in an MMO.
If everyone is using text, then raids and pvp can work very well, people learn how to play and use text macros.
But if it's mixed, some on vent, some on text, it just don't work out that well for the text users. It never really does.

Honestly, I find trying to use text to organize a raid to be a painful experience. Even using Macros; it's a more time-consuming way to do something that can trivially be accomplished usiing voice. It strikes me as an odd way of thinking: "There's a better way to do this, but I'm not going to use it for whatever reason". There are some places where voice is just so much better suited than text, it makes sense to use Voice, and I view large group organization as one of those things. It's exacerbated by the fact that as a Software Developer, one of the primary philosiphies you learn to remember at an early age is "People don't read".
This, exactly!
Also, and maybe this is just me, have you ever heard anyone speak in character on Vent? We had this one guy in our guild on Scarlet Crusade that was always in character during raids and said the same things that night elf NPCs say and it was really bizarre!
Not odd when you have no choice. And if text is the only way a guild communicates they will get good at it, we are gamers after all. Hell I MUD'd for 5 years, I can do a lot with text.
But all text will work better (for all players) than mixed text and voice. Because everyone is on the same page.
And with no voice people with learn to communicate without communicating and end up being even better than a group using voice. IMHO.

This is very appealing to me. I've used vent in the past and I have no problems with it. But I don't want to keep vent running the entire time I'm in Rift. Launching it up for a dungeon run or raid is one thing... I'm definitely looking for a guild that keeps 90% of the chat on screen and out of my ears.
Personally I tend not to use Vent unless raiding, and those whom I am raiding with require it. To me it takes away from immersion. I like to be IC 99% of the time and while Vent can be fun at times the chatter does get annoying. I also don't think it's neccesary to raid succesfully. Hell, we didn't even have such a thing "back in the day".
At any rate I think it's a great idea for a guild. As for myself I will be looking for a Heavy RP guild, but the best of luck to you!![]()
Well if you can to change to 90% to 100% then check us out. We are very new (started today) but hopefully we will recruit fast tomorrow. We will raid and do pvp without voice as well. So no voice cracking 14 year old telling you what to do with his mom yelling at him in the background.
