    Default Leveling as a Defiler

This guide focuses on damage & self healing while leveling as a Defiler. Which is good for Soloing, Instant Adventures, Dungeons and Warfronts.
Though warning mistakes could be present.

As you enter the game there’s some key points you should know as a Defiler:
    • Defiler damage over time abilities (DoTs) are worth using, while other DoTs are not, as they have more damage than normal.
    • Rage damage over time abilities heal you for their duration, while Greed damage over time abilities damage you on cast for a percentage of your maximum health.
    • Rage DoTs have a chance to build stacks of Rage on you per tick of damage, and the same goes for Greed DoTs building Greed stacks. These stacks will become a important part of your rotation later on.

As a Defiler the best combo at Level 2 is 2 Defiler, 0 Inquisitor, 0 Druid

So at the start you have:
    - Rage Extraction your first Defiler DoT that we start off with for now.
    - Marrow Harvest doesn’t trigger combat so we will be using it before are Defiler DoTs.
    - Fervent Strike is a melee ability that we will use a filler while DoTs tick away.
    - Somatic Desecration & Bolt of Judgment won't be used as they have a cast time of 2s.
    - Vex won’t be using as it’s a Non-Defiler DoT and isn’t worth the global cooldown.
    - Satyr Protector a Pet that we won’t be using as it can’t tank or deal much damage, it’s only good for clicking objects or Artifacts to distract the enemy if close by.
    - Faerie Healer also a Pet that we will want active all the time, as it heals you up when you take damage which is great; until later levels when it’s healing can’t keep up with the damage you take.

    So now onto macros:
I find macros are really helpful no matter the level and reduce the space needed on your bars, so instead of pressing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 you press 1, 2 and 3.

    So here’s your first macro:
    #show Fervent Strike
    suppressmacrofailures
    cast Marrow Harvest
    cast Fervent Strike
    cast Rage Extraction
    cast Break Free
Now I’ve added Break Free in there, it’s not part of your souls though it is a ability you get at level 1 from the Ascended Powers tab like your out-of-combat resurrection ability.

Most don’t macro as they think you should save it for specific abilities and say you're a bad player for doing so don’t listen, the only time where it can triggered so many times in a few seconds is in Warfronts and even then are you that quick to use it? and when should you as there are so many abilities that can get you?

Placement of the ability at the back of the macro with help avoid using Break Free on snares and roots for a second and will trigger right away if you get stunned or disabled. So long as you're pressing the macro.

Having Rage Extraction at the bottom will only have it trigger when not in melee range of the enemy, so you need to bind it to the hotbar separately from the macro.
    Rotation:
    Marrow Harvest > Rage Extraction
    Spam Fervent Strike

At this point I want to introduce Kalerts to you to help keep track of specific abilities, this is a very useful addon that you can use at any level though it’s extremely important for Defiler to keep track of all the DoTs you will have later on.

The addon is called karuulalert which you can download from http://www.curse.com/addons/rift/karuulalert

You have Sets which match the number of Roles you have so if you have 3 Roles you can have Set 1 track buffs for your 1st Role then Set 2 track buffs for your 2nd Role and so on.
If you go through all the Sets you come across Subsets which allows you track abilities no matter what Set you are using.
So in short use Sets for your Roles and Subsets for Boss Mechanics.

Karuulalert also need to learn abilities if you need to make new Kalerts, it needs to be scanning while you play.

    Karuulalert:
    Code:
    KA::AweSgeNqtlstu2zAQRX9Fu+5SviVBK+rBIEDbReJ0ZUCgbcomoogGSRc12v57KUUJ4sT1Iy4

    • 1 Point into Planar Study (Defiler)
    • 2 Points into Open Minded (Defiler) giving you Greed's Corruption a Greed DoT, that cost 7% of you maximum health so we don't want to spam it just yet.
    • 1 Point into Planar Study (Inquisitor) give you Armor of Devotion a Buff that increases Crit chance.
    • 3 Points into Obsessive (Defiler) gives you Aggressive Avarice giving use to your Greed stacks.

    • 1 Point into Scarred Heart (Defiler)
    • 1 Point into Bond of Pain (Defiler) a major cooldown ability.

Thank you for the guide. I love DOT class.
    Is Defiler better than Cabalist?
I am new to the class.

When leveling while doing Quests, Dungeons or Warfronts you can kill about 3 enemies easily putting your dots on each, for Quest you want the Beacon already out nearby before you do damage.

While for Cabalist you only want to use in Dungeons and Raids dealing with at least 5 enemies at a time or Rifts with lots of players.

Heya Burn - I've been enjoying your guides - makes me wish I had 4 character slots.

Quite note, you have a typo in the first macro:
    cuppressmacrofailures

    Cheers

Defiler is not available in Prime yet is it? If so, how do you get it? I don't see it at the trainer or in the shop.

Good for leveling, but not so great for PvP. Obviously then you want to keep it range based, potentially 2 in inquisitor for increased range and buff, and the rest in cabalist for increased DoT damage and jump.

And in Meridian the soul vendor is near the porticulum, next to the pagoda thingy with the class trainers.

As a Defiler, I've found that I can solo certain packs of dungeon trash, which ends up being fairly good exp with the bonus of being more flexible since you can take a break whenever you want and aren't reliant on the LFG queue or anything.

For example, I did all of level 31 in 90 minutes by soloing in Foul Cascade. In dungeons, you can kill something and zone out and immediately zone back in and everything will be reset (minus what you've killed). So in FC I can kill the three packs to the left of the entrance with an elite caster and nonelite zombies, plus the static group of 3 elites and the roaming pack of 3 elites. The large Giants seem to have too much health and do too much damage to be worth it, and the packs to the right tend to be annoying due to LOS issues. Soloing the non elites in FC give 1100-1200 exp and the elites give ~2400, and you can clear pretty quickly once you get a feel for how many you can kill before zoning out and back in.

I haven't tried this anywhere else yet, and maybe the quest exp boost coming Wednesday will make this type of grind pointless, but for now it seems to be a viable alternative.
