Default RIFT crashing when porting or soul-recalling? Possible solution here.

OS: Windows 7 32-bit with 4gigs of Ram. ATI Radeon HD5750 card.

Problem: Rift crashes to desktop when porting or soul recalling.

I defraged my hd, page file and ram.
    Defraged registry.
    Ran a zillion optimizing tools.

    Nothing helped.

    Until this:

    • START BUTTON
    • In the search box type "cmd" without quotes BUT DONT HIT ENTER.
    • "CMD" will appear in the PROGRAMS pull down list.
    • Right click on CMD and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
    • dos box C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32> prompt will appear. (YOU MUST BE AT THIS DIRECTORY!!!)
    • enter: "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072" with no quotes
    • Enter key and Re-boot.
Explanation of what you just did:

Seems Rift requires a bit more RAM than what is admitted. W7 32bit shares ram 50-50 with the OS and program. But what if Rift wants more than 50%. if it doesnt have it, it crashes.

The above fix adjusts RAM allocation so that RIFT gets 2/3 or Ram (instead of 1/2) and OS gets 1/3 of RAM (instead of 1/2).

Since this I haven't noticed any crashes.

Please note: I did this on W7 32 bit with 4 G of Ram installed. Dont known how this will work with any other configuration and if you have less than 4Gig this may not work and a figure other than 3072 may have to be used.

google: IncreaseUserVa for more info on the subject.

Or trion can just fix their game. I want to do this but i don't know how i can get it back to normal if something bad happens.

I'm guessing you just type? enter: "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 2072" with no quotes?

EDIT: wait nm i found out how you type "bcdedit /deletevalue increaseuserva"

    thx

So i was wanting to try this but i don't seem to be as skilled as the rest of you. When i hit start i don't have a search box. Did you skip a step in the description? I see the search option but when i click it and type "cmd" in the various boxes available i never see anything happen. Can anyone dumb this down for me as the crashing is getting ridiculous?

Alternately you can open the command prompt form the programs menu, type in cd C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 then follow the rest of the instructions as you are now at the correct command prompt. (cd is simply DOS shorthand for "change directory" old stuff we all did before Windows, which is the foundation for this fix.)

Is there any way this can work on Windows XP? I go to the proper directory and open cmd (can't run as admin in XP as far as I am aware?) and write as specified. This is the error I receive: 'bcdedit' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I hope there is because I crash on almost every single soul recall and teleport now, it is getting pretty intolerable.

Here's a link to MS support page with instructions to set "userva" in WinXP.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316739/en-us

In short you have to edit your boot.ini file located in C:\ to set "userva" value.
Add /3GB /userva=2900 after /fastdetect and save. Restart PC to make it work.

Should look something like this in your boot.ini file:
    Code:
    \WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /3GB /userva=2900
    Regards
