Have not been running with 'Power management mode = Prefer maximum performance', but 'Adaptive' (by mistake), and have been experiencing a lot of problems with 'GPU Usage' suddenly spiking at what seems to be random points, along with more than halfing my FPS and making the game more or less unplayable.

Only fix has so far been complete restarts. I'm hoping changing the power management mode from adaptive to prefer max. performance will solve the problem completely, as nothing else has so far.

What's been weirdest is that I've been able to run complete Conquest runs, 20-man raids etc. without a problem, and then it would suddenly spike afterwards standing in Sanctum/Meridian, or while running a 10-man etc., so there hasn't been any red thread of any sort. At one point it spiked in Shimmersand (moving towards large areas of water does seem to spike the problem, but it's just a hunch) while the zone was more or less empty, immediately increasing GPU Usage towards max. (from a 30-50% point) and lowering the FPS to about 20-40% compared to the second before. With no fix other than restarting the computer.

This never happened with my old GFX card (GF GTX 275), but appeared since I had to change it to a GF GTX 550 Ti, so it's probably very related to specific GFX cards.

The tips don't help at all. Dont even bother editing your .cfg file, it's just a waste of time.

The game runs nice if you are just questing normally, but as soon as you enter Sanctum or there is alot other players on screen, then the FPS just drops enourmously - even in 800x600 with the lowest details. Ridiculous.

The game is severly CPU limited. It will run like ballz until they fix it, but this does not seem to be a priority for some unexplainable reason (even 1 year after release!!!). I have played numerous other MMOs and they all run very good... just not this game.

btw, my System: Phenom II X4 @ 3200MHz; Radeon HD5770

FIX IT TRION!!! It is extremely annoying. I hate to say this, but I am sure that alot of players cancelled their subscriptions just because of the horrendous CPU performance.

Default messed something up...Rift in x32

"The color scheme has been changed to Windows 7 Basic"

How do I keep this from happening?

While trying to increase my FPS I made a change somewhere and I am not sure what I messed up.

Rift (only) once started changes my comp into windows basic (x32) instead of X64.

Is there a way to change this back?

    thank you

If only we could turn off effects and spell-effects totally, the FPS woulnd't be so much of an issue. But if you try bosses like Ituziel and Sicaron on a lesser rig you'll know what the fuss is all about ;)

maybe some people here can help ME

    my system:

    16gb ram
    radeon 5870
    phenom x4 black edition 965
    no ssd

internet: 0,234 mbit per sec (download) (dsl 2000)

i get horrible lag spikes in a 20man raid OR conquest big fights. and i have no idea why. yes sure.. no one gets 60constant fps in conquest or in a 20man raid.but this is mysterious

example: i run around sanctum in prime time and got fps from like 29-33 (on ultra) (standard settings)

i go low render stand in the same spot: maybe 35-37fps (nothing more) <-- wtf?

also at a friends with a semi like system. except that his internet is ALOT faster. he has the same frames mostly (maybe 3-5difference) but NO lags.. N O T H I NG. completly lagfree and playable like he has 60fps

so what the hell is that ? is it really my internet? that causes "fps lag?" (tho in 5man instances there is no problem) also other games dont make any trouble

is it my cpu? (i doubt it cause then in all the others games i must have the same problems)
is it that radeon sucks for rift? and nvidia doing a lotbetter? (better programmed for the game)
    or really the internet speed

    I just dont get it.

    Default Overheating?

Maybe your machine overheats. I am however aware and will point out as well that the engine has really big problems with the resource management. LESS CONTENT - MORE FPS.

I've spent about 4 hrs yesterday trying to improve my in-game fps. Have similar simptoms - when first started game run smoothly, but in an hour or less fps drops dramatically (from 20-25 fps to 10-16).

So I've tried all the methods, described in this thread, but nothing helps really. Same case - first minutes of playing are nice, but then ...

So after reading your post I've checked my CPU and GPU temperatures. GPU was about 85, which is normal for my NVidia GTX280. But CPU temp was about 100 degrees (celcius) - this is, as far as I know TJ Max limit, after which overheating built-in defence has been started (throttling) ...

Today I've detached cooler from my CPU, vaсuumed my PC case, cleaned cooler, and installed everything back. Ingame FPS rised up two times after this - from my 20-25 maximum to 40-50 and even 50, which is very good for my PC (configuration at the end of this post).

But temperature is steal very hot - about 60 degrees without heavy load, and about 90-95 with it. Still, fps is normal, but I've already purchase new high-perfomance cooler system for my CPU and will install it tommorow. I don't think it'll give me some more fps, but will prevent my system from fps droping down in future.

By the way, I've tried today to make ULTRA graphics settings - fps still about 35-40 even with supersampling ... Only things I've turned off is Ambient Occlusion, VSync and turned Shadows to "none" (in my opinion - shadows are the main reason of fps drops down, not the VFXLimit, which can affect game perfomance only in dungeons and other mass-playing areas, but I havn't tested it yet enough to say for sure).

    System is the following:

    MSI Eclipse X58
    Intel i7 920 2.67 Ghz
    Zotac Nvidia GTX280 1Gb 600Mhz
    RAM 6Gb DDR3 2200 Mhz
    Windows Vista Home ...

So, for those of you, who has fps drops down after a while since you've started your game - my experience is good reason to check your system for overheating ...

@ Luckydon: Make sure you have a fan that pull away the air from your Video Card. Otherwise all the hot air that generated by your GPU stuck inside.

    About the FPS drop:

Dabbu Aisola I have the same problem then you guys. My fps on high settings are around 50 FPS but when i get into raid it drops around 20 FPS.

I have done all possible steps to pump out the maximum that my PC can do.

Set windows settings for best preformance (all possible settings)
Reresh Video driver , MB bios , Videocard bios, and set everything to get maximum performance.
Done all the steps that mentioned in this topic by TheAdmiral and other ppl.
    Installed GameBooster3 ( not realy a big help )

After this i set the game settings to low and screen back to 800x600, later to 1024x768.

Same Problem !! my FPS didnt realy changed no matter what ingame settings you use Low or Ultra.

So i think the game have problems and not our PC. Lets hope the guys at Trion got any idea what are they doing.

P.S.: Other games, even ones with higher system req are running fine and smooth.

    I blame Trion Ha-Ha !

It sounds like you changed the compatibility settings for Rift. (Right click Rift icon, open properties, check compatibility.)

Default GPU temp, Fan Speeds, Overheating.. laptop with ATI/ATM graphics.

For those running Windows 7 64bit on a laptop, with an ATI/AMD mobility card. I recommend the desktop plugin for monitoring called GPU observer. This will let you monitor GPU temp and Fan speed.

I noticed that there was no way to force my GPU fan speed over 30%. Not via BIOS, nor Windows.

After a number of "forced shutdowns", I installed the GPU observer, and found the GPU was running VERY hot, even on MIN game settings. Thats also how I found the fan speed sitting at 30%.

Soo.. after trying numerous progams to force the fan speed, I found one that was simple to use.

    MSI Afterburner

Install.. leave everything else defaulted. Change the fan speed.. and save to a profile, set to autoload, and enjoy. Dropped my heat levels drastically, and improved performance in "crowded" areas and raids.

This is not a fix all, but for those of us stuck on a laptop, quite handy.

Default need help on a few things

    To: The Admiral

I have attempted to follow your instructions of July 2012 to the letter. But I've run into a few items that I can not locate on the rift.cfg file.

Near the end of your instructions, you state: "Next change "AmbientOcclusion=True" to False."
I do not have that listing on my copy of the "rift.cfg" file.

You also say to pull up task manager and "go into the processes tab. Right click on the Rift process and set the priority to High".
I do not seem to have any such setting ability in my version of the task manager (Win7)

And earlier in your instructions you provide some stuff about NVidea graphics card. You said: "make sure 'Power Management Mode' is set to 'Application Controlled' in the Catalyst Control Center -- etc.
I can't even fine the Power Management Mode.
I've written to NVidea for help on this but if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

By following all your other instructions, I have definitely improved the video aspect of the game. However, when the invasions become truly aggressive with massive volume of mobs, I still tend to get what sounds like heavy machine gun sounds. It's not nearly as bad as it was and I'm thinking that perhaps being able to complete all the steps of your instructions is very likely to give me the full solution to my problem. And at least all the previous lag I was having is now gone.

Can you guide me through the solutions to the above mentioned issues?
I'm attaching a copy of my rift.cfg file for your reference. (well I was planning on doing this but now I am unable to determine just how to attach a file to a post - sorry)
I'm using Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1; AMD Phenom 9100e Quad-Core Processor, 4.0GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 430. And I've updated all my drivers.

    Many thanks

I just wanted to add a post script to my previous post.

I did some more research at the NVIDIA website and located instructions that helped me made all the changes that The Admiral listed in his instructions concerning NVIDIA graphics cards. So I am in good shape as far as that goes.

I also was able to set the AmbientOcclusion to "off" via that control panel.

I'm heading back into the game to see if all of these supplemental setting will now give me less of or none of that "machine gun" sound.

And I was finally able to locate the priority setting aspect on the Task Manager. My error previously was that I had not selected the processes tab.

So I am going back into the game with fingers crossed. I've followed through on everything as per the instructions. If the machine guns have stopped, I will be a most happy player.
