Default Got hacked. Got helped. Just posting for everyone's info.

    Hey guys,

So I may be one of the first... but my account actually got hacked Saturday evening. I was playing a ton all day, and at one point I logged out to the character screen for about 30 minutes to take care of some laundry. Once I came back, I logged in and my character had been soul recalled, all items stripped and sold, all bags sold, and all money sent off into the ether. Basically that speed and efficiency you come to expect from people who do this sort of thing for a living.

Anyway, I didn't freak out too much due to the fact that I was only 41 and hadn't lost anything I couldn't regain fairly quickly. I took the necessary steps that anyone should do in a situation like this: do full virus scan, change password, change email password, switch to a different email account, etc. I have no clue how it happened, as I am a very careful person in general. I didn't utilize any addons, didn't download any fishy parsers or log into any fishy rift websites, etc. I would guess they either used a keylogger or somehow had my account credentials from way back in the beta days (as I've had this account since the beginning) but who knows.

Just wanted to provide some information about how my experience went with Trion, since it was overall much better than I've heard from other games with this sort of issue.

After the incident happened, I immediately put in a petition about my account being compromised with all the details and the actions I was taking on my own in response (virus scanning, etc). I think it took them about 8-10 hours to respond, so that was a fairly good turn around. They investigated the issue, refunded the 25-30 plat I had on my character and offered me the choice to roll back that character to the prior evening to regain all my gear and such. At this point I had already gained another level or so, as I wasn't going to let the hacking incident kill my time playing rift on the weekend, so I decided to just take my plat and move on. Hopefully I can be even more vigilant and this sort of thing won't happen again, as I really don't know how it did in the first place. This is my first experience getting hacked in an MMO in the many years (since Asheron's Call beta) I have played them.

Let it be a lesson and move on I suppose. Trion was (As they have been through beta and launch) very responsive, helpful and friendly. Kudos to them for making this a smooth recovery.

A compromised account does not = being hacked. The term has been butchered so badly that very few people seem to even remember it's actual definition.

I'm of course using the term "hacked" in place of "compromised" or "hijacked" due to popular usage these days. And no, there were of course no gold selling websites involved, else I probably would have lost way more than 25-30 plat ;)

Luckily I hadn't really used any runes of consequence. All the gear I had was just average blues from planar goods and pvp merchants. The only thing I was a little upset at losing was a purple 2 hander from a world puzzle, but in the end I was able to get a few more levels and do about a half a dozen runs in The Fall of Lantern Hook and I'm back to parity once again

I probably would have been a bit more upset if I was a 50 with a ton of hard-earned items. In that case I would have definitely went with the rollback.
