See how the f2p model for Rift comes up quite often in various articles around the net, I'm not gonna purchase the expansion until they tell us what are they plans on this matter. Buying an exp 2 weeks before they announce Rift to become f2p... I'm not gonna fall for such things.

Problem is that at the same time there were some other occasions where they said they're considering it... so which one is the truth? Even in the most recent Reddit AMA, Scott said that they're talking about it quite a lot and they'll see what would be best (Extended Lite, content for those who don't wish to pay monthly).

It will indeed depends on the succes of Storm Legion, but even then it wouldnt come sooner then after a few months(since you only know how much subs you retain after a while)

You can never take what a gaming company says they will and will not do to heart. When DDO went F2P, Turbine said Lotro would not be going that route. One year later, Lotro went F2P.

Thats true, but in that case you wil never believe what they say and thus it doesnt matter if they will say it again a few times before SL, right ;)
    that was my point

The difference is that the developer and the publisher is the same for Rift (Trion Worlds), so ultimately they are the one deciding on whether it is beneficial for them to keep the game as it is or change it to better suit their financial needs. There's noone pushing them around, noone to overrule them, the decision is theirs.
Trion so far has maintained a quite open community channel (especially when compared to other companies), where they didn't hide the bad and worse from the crowd, they were fair to us.

Asking them what they current plans are and whether they can promise not to ruin their games for at least another year or beyond is something they can quite surely tell us, without forcing hands from Publisher PR & Marketing Dep. reaching to them, they can choose to be honest and straightforward or leave us in the dark for a "big surprise".

Of course here comes in the other thing, the idea of crossing the line of "trusty, quality-ensured "we stick with our game even if it's not as successful as other products out there because we actually care what we leave behind throughout the years" and the greedy "until servershutdowns, we try to squeeze out as much money as we can while we create our next moneysinker MMO".
Taking either paths can lead to success, but there'is also a huge difference there.

Since there's virtually no puppeteer behind them, they are the one to decide which they're gonna become. But that choice will stick with them till the company dies.

Because of the reasons above, I'd rather believe their official statements on the matter than any other gaming company out there.

I think the problem with WoW is simple. WoW is a very different game now from when it first came out.

Changing MMOs to be more like RPG games has made players treat MMOs like RPG games - disposable. The free to play MMOs have inflated subscription numbers because there's never a reason to unsubscribe, a better gauge would be to look at revenue for active players.

If I was a MMO company I'd look more at games like Eve to see what makes them successful. Eve has been the only game to consistently gain revenue/subs as the game has gone on. I'd then compare with WoW and SW to see what you don't do. If Eve had the same launch as other MMOs with large initial numbers it would be where WoW is now, only it never would have lost it's subscriptions.

EVE has seen several drops in their subs. Many ex-Eve players are disgruntled by changes
EVE would never come above the numbers they are on now, simple because the game is only attractive for a few("few" is relative)
Not saying that EVE doesnt have nice ideas, and does a lot good. But to make it to be an example for other companies goes to far imo
