I wish I never left RIFT, to try Tera, and here's why. If you don't want to read a long post about my story, then close this thread :')
I guess I'll begin by saying why I left RIFT in the first place.
RIFT kept me hooked good and proper for months and the only gaming experience that had come close to matching my time in RIFT was Runescape during its glory years in around 2005-2007.
I loved, and still love, RIFT, and most of all, Trion.
After a good few months of dungeons, zone events, questing, raids and PvP I was fully HK geared, and r40 in PvP. I'd left my big raiding guild (b/c I moved to Australia in this time and couldn't find a raiding guild that raided during Aussie hours on my EU server) and joined a small PvP group led my a fellow Aussie, a chick from NZ and the best warrior on the server. During this time we were like family and we spent hours making new builds, kicking ***!!!! and it was just so fun.
But there was only so long we could keep doing the same WFs over and over and over and over and over, I got bored. I loved RIFT, but I got bored, the PvP community was dwindling and needed a breath of fresh air desperately!!!!
Instead, they brought out Infernal Dawn.
With sadness, I bought Tera when it was released, and have regretted it ever since.
Tera is a game I've got a love/hate relationship with. On the one hand, its graphics are simply stunning, I LOVE the Asian style, the armour, races and classes, and my god, I LOVE the combat system.
In my reasoned opinion, the combat system is Tera is light years ahead of any MMO that will be released in the next few years, it's that good.
But the company that runs the EU version, Frogster, is an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE. Don't get me wrong, I always loved and appreciated Trion, but trying to play a game run by this pathetic excuse for a company really drives the message home.
CONSTANT server disconnections. Maintenance every week - today, they shut the servers down for an estimated 11 hours and maintenance, and then EXTENDED THAT, to 13 hours. The servers are still freaking down.
Compared to the Korean and US versions of the game, the EU version is literally over a month behind in content. At present, they haven't even got an ETA on two MAJOR end game pieces of content (Nexus and ToT for you Tera fans reading this), and they released the game without the game's equivalent to warfronts. Yep, no PvP other than scare open world.
The end game in EU currently consists of two 5 man dungeons, and a heavy mob grind for gold. Add to this, two weeks ago a massive bug was exposed that allowed players to literally skip 100+ hours of gameplay, that went completely unpunished. It took Frogster 24 hours to realise the bug was being abused and the servers were down for over 8 hours as they 'hotfixed' it.
Compared to Frogster, Trion is amazing. I still frequent these forums, I love the contact they have with the community. During my time in RIFT the servers were hardly, if ever, down for more than 2 hours. The way Trion runs this game, is quite simply, amazing, and I miss it.
RIFT is, undeniably, the better game, and the better managed game, so why don't I come back?? I tried!!!
The combat is Tera is just too damn good to leave!!!!!! I came back to RIFT and it just felt out-dated and clunky. This isn't an insult, RIFT is RIFT and I love it, it's just the way it is, and Tera keeps giving me little glimpses of would could have, WHAT COULD STILL BE!
Yesterday me and another person I'd just met teamed up to kill a BAM (big *** monster, Tera terminology), which is challenging enough (they are meant for 5 people to kill but in Tera, it's about player skill, you can solo/duo stuff if you are skilled enough) and the BAM crashed into another BAM and aggro'd it, so we were fighting two BAMs at the same time, it was AMAZING. BAMs can literally kill you in one hit if you let them hit you, for 20 minutes we fought these monsters side by side knowing a single mistake would wipe us, and yet we did it. Afterwards, I felt like I hadn't blinked for 20 minutes, my eyes stung and I had sweat dripping from my arm pits. It was THAT good.
Oh Tera, how amazing you could be, if only it was developed by Trion!! Haha.
So anyways, to end my little story, this is where I stand now. I've gone from being happy, completely happy in RIFT, to unsatisfied with both Tera, and now RIFT.
RIFT seems outdated and Tera doesn't live up to its potential under these muppets over at Frogster.
The community sucks there too, I miss you guys.
I wish I never left.
