Thread: trion worlds supports SOPA I think this is one of those times where actually looking into what is going on with this proposed law and you'd be better informed and not make comments like this. I agree wholeheartedly about the piracy thing. Most people do. However this particular version of the law uses 'we must stop piracy' and takes it into another realm entirely. That's why so many people, including major companies are up in arms. The political 'fight' is occuring well beyond just individual people boycotting. Things like Google (and the like) threatening blackouts of their services from anywhere to hour to an entire week. They think it's that serious.
I'm not American but am paying attention because the ramifications, because the internet is boarderless would extend beyond just US borders.
While I agree with you in principle, banning someone for idiocy would empty the forums of pretty much everyone, because we have all been idiots at one point or another.
SOPA is like the Patriot Act. On the surface, looks to be a rather harmless law to try to protect folks from copyright infringement. Like tha Patriot Act, if you look deeper into it, it is truly scary.
The best thing one can do about it is remember that 2012 is an election year.
Thank you Trion for setting the record straight! And Scott, sorry to interrupt your Holiday Vacation!

I'm against banning the OP and I consider this thread very relevant and welcome. After all, SOPA would affect we all as a gamers community. I'm quite sure for some of us it's the first time they get to know about this law proposal and bringing it up for discussion where it matter is never a waste of space.
Also, it was very good to get some "official" word from Trion letting us know they do not support that SOPA.
I support Laws that come to defend copyrights, because if we have all thsoe suberb games to enjoy it's because there are professionals working on developting them. And the said professionals have their bills to pay and, hell, it's great to get paid for yoru hardwork. SOPA is simply abusive.
Avoinding and alienating ourselves regarding such matter is all what those ******ed politicians wants. As well as keep on throwing poop at each other....
This should be a lesson to you all about believing a random poster without hard fact.
Real glad they're not actually in support of this, and it was just a lie.
I'm not even American but a "Great Firewall of USA" akin to what the authoritarian government of PRC runs is insanity. It's not even about piracy or anything, it's the concept freedom of information which defines a free society.
Couple things.
1. Theft is where the person stolen from ceases to have the thing. Copyright infringement may be bad, but it's not theft.
2. Collateral damage.
If you really could magically make a law that exactly covered only downloading the legal property of someone else, I might be more comfortable with it. Probably not, because fair use is a real and important thing.
But no such law exists, nor has any such law been proposed. What's on offer is a law that gives our government comparable control over the Internet to what China and Iran have, including the ability to completely shut off any site. Say someone decides that the picture in Zyzyx's sig is technically theirs. "riftgame.com" is now off the internet, and it's a crime to own software which would allow you to circumvent this.
Here is a list of software you may have heard of which would be illegal to use under this law:
Windows XP
Windows 7
Mac OS 9
Mac OS X
Linux
NetBSD
FreeBSD
Android
... Because, see, the ability to circumvent the mechanism described is absolutely fundamental to the ability to work with the Internet in the first place.
The law doesn't prevent illegal downloading. It completely eradicates all contact of any sort with anyone who has been accused of participation in illegal downloading including all their legitimate stuff, and in many cases, all the people who are nearby.
There is a reason that everyone basically familiar with the technology hates it -- it's a law that was written by people who did not understand the technology, and who don't see any risks in giving the government the ability to instantly and completely shut off any source of information they want.
You can play WoW in any MMO. You don't have to play WoW in RIFT. Oh, and no, RIFT is not a WoW clone. Not having fun any more? Learn to play, noob! I don't speak for Riftui, but I moderate stuff there. Got ideas for improving the RIFT community? Feel free to PM me. Just came back? Welcome back! Here's what's changed. (NOTE NEW URL)

I'd cancel my sub if the op didn't cancel and there would be a chance of me meeting him in game.
oh yeah and yesterday this thread got locked then restored and let be but today a mod decides it needs to be moved so it could get buried where its not viewed as much in general even though imo it is very much Rift related in that it was a decent discussion going on. If it was going to be moved could not Hartman move it himself?
He's on vacation, and really, it's a non-issue. I suspect the mods actually moved it to reduce his post count. It's one of those countless tiny rebellions. :P
