In your own words, how have MMOs progressed.
Please state:
First MMO: Ultima online 1997
Total years playing MMOs: 1997-untill today
Last MMO: Warhammer online but possibly wow i forget its been a while
How have they progressed:
In my opinion, i think MMOs have progressed in some area's and digressed in many. Today there are more options, a few more idea's but the day of the true open ended MMO is gone. There are no sand boxes , just castles in the sand already built for you, however sometimes these castles are endlessly beautiful.
The day when buying a new MMO and becoming completely engulfed in the world and emotional about every decision is gone for me, it was gone the day Oragin was bought by mythic.
For me where MMOs have progressed the most is with the way you can build your char, we went from your char can be whatever you want, to it has to be this way, to it has to be that way, to ok well now it can be this way and that way but you still have limitations.
Regardless of all the new stuff, and new isnt always better i might add. I think MMOs have come a far way, from a little niche community where 9/10 people had no idea what a a MMO was to MMOs being shown in commercials and in TV shows like south park. Gaming has become a world wide phenomenon and not just for your little nerdy geeky dork (which we all are at heart wether you wana admit it or not!!!!)

Rift Master
Well, it evolved with the tech age. Better graphics sure, but people want things faster and faster. And after playing so many mmo's it becomes the same grind. You remember the days of "emotional" attachment to an mmo because they were new to you and you got involved. Now it feels like "oh level one sweet now I grind and quest. Oh look theres a gimick oh well. Great more ...holes on chat again yep remember them. Oh a new area this is neat, ok more questing"
That is the human experience for you. When it comes easy and fast we get bored easy and fast.
Imagine an mmo that took a month to hit level 10. Or one that when you die you lost your character like hardcore diablo. But game companies wont do it bcause the majority of their cash flow comes from the easy elite grinders that would gripe to no end.
