    Default RIFT and Add-ons

    Hi, All-

There have been a lot of questions about Rift and the use of Add-ons. We'd like to clear up where we stand on this issue.

There is a lot of confusion surrounding our position on Addons and other types of UI modifications, so it is not at all surprising that a reasonable person would think that we are universally against them.

It's true that RIFT at launch does not have any API support for addons. The reason that we have chosen to go this route is the same as we publicly described when we unveiled the game in early 2010.

Whenever we consider adding a new feature to RIFT, we first and foremost want to make sure that we ship and support it at high quality. That's the primary yardstick we use. If we can't, we will tend to hold off until we can.

Supporting Addons, Skinning, and other UI Modifications in a way that is of sufficiently high quality, stability, and in a way that does not allow for the creation of automated play (e.g. bots, which are inherently a negative to the overall experience) was not a task that we could afford to take lightly. Instead, we chose to provide a robust, attractive UI that players could customize in many ways.

As we work toward the future of RIFT, we will be looking to provide new ways for users to customize their experience, through more customizations and possibly all the way through addons and skinning -- To us, the issue is primarily one of providing all features at the proper quality that RIFT players deserve.

Thanks for the clarification Abi! Glad to hear then when addons are added (if they are) one day, they will be implemented with out the worry of character automation! The UI customization Trion has added so far is a very good addition. I look forward to the next round of customizations that we get, ESPECIALLY from a healing standout.

I have to say, so far, I've not needed my UI to do anything I haven't been able to change in my settings. I look forward to seeing what else you have planned on this front though. Just as long as there is no room for any sort of modification that allows automation of any actions, if mods are ever an option.

Is there any way of Trion including a threat meter with the release? I am a min/max kind of a person and like to be able to monitor and try to maximize my threat output while tanking.

I was thinking if there was a chance that we could get a buttom, To make all our bags pop up into one big bag instead... It narrows down the fuzzle about needing to either push B all the time, or Close each bag with the mouse individually

I'm certainly hoping for a Threat & DPS meter, especially if it's made by the devs

I really hope there comes a time(soon) that the developers feel safe enough to give the fans an API to tailor the game to their needs and desires. A lot of fantastic ideas for feature additions comes from seeing what your players build to make the game more enjoyable for themselves.

I hope there is *never* a threat meter or DPS meter. That being said...

The only thing I would like to see with the UI is an ability to save your current settings for other characters and being able to import/load the setting on a different character either per server or per account.

Bots are bad!!! The only addon's i ever used when i was playing WoW was Bagon(basicly puts all your bags into one), Cooldown timers and sometimes a mail collection addon. Thats all you really need...

Thanks for making an official post about this, now I have something to show the people who ask about Trion's stance on mods.

Yes, the current ui is wonderful and extremely customizable but there are a few tweaks that could be made that would make a lot of people really happy. Rather than list them all again, here's a link. If anyone has any requests, throw it into a comment. ^.^

i have this creeping suspsicon that disallowing add-ons is a GREAT IDEA .

i can't help but think that it might help with security issues, anyone think so?
