The results sound right--the game is roughly fine difficulty-wise. Most people are cool with it, and only a minority feel it's too hard or too easy.
I'm also in the camp that's pleased with the encounters in RIFT. Solo play is fine, and I can even mentor down if I want more of a challenge in a fight. Grouping for dungeons and such has variable difficulty depending on everyone's gear, attention and awareness of area layout and mechanics, etc.
