Gifting storm legion?

So... I would like to gift storm legion to my friend. I would have to do it via steam, but im worrying one thing. My friend havent classic version on steam, he have bought it from rift websites, so am I able to gift him storm legion with steam and can he actually play it? even he havent classic version on steam. Sry for bad english, im tired :P

I haven't done any Rift purchases through Steam, but I have run into trouble with other games not wanting to recognize expansions for non-Steam originals.

I would consider buying it through Amazon, that way you get a code you can gift.
