Default Questions (Mage's new calling, mounts, rested XP)

    1. Mage's New Calling - I just read about the new Harbinger calling. It's apparently going to be some type of close combat calling. Excuse me?? The last thing I want for my squishy mage is to fight in close combat. Unless there are some serious HP / resistance buffs, this won't fly.

Also, will Trion give us a free respec? It's fine if they do, but PLEASE make it optional. I already got my War/Necro/Pyro build figured out. It may not have the best skill rotation or highest DPS, but it's what I like to play, and that's what matters to me. So, if there's a free respec coming along with SL, give us the option to use the free respec whenever we want, or not at all.

    2. Mounts - this has been bugging me for a while. What's the criteria used for dismount? I run past mobs, they shoot me, fine. I can shake some off after a few hits, others dismount me after a few hits. Then I have the option to stop and kill them or keep running on foot until they stop following me. This is regardless of mob level (I'm 50). Wouldn't it be easier if mounts had an HP bar, like in LOTRO, so I know when I'm about to dismount?

    3. Rested XP - how dooes this work? Sometimes I'll log in and have very little rested XP. Others, I'll just take a bathroom break and have plenty of rested XP. Do I need to be parked in Sanctum for my rested XP to accrue? Is there a cap for rested XP (like at the end of the level gauge)?

Take a look at how it works here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3uLqzTtOaw&feature=plcp

Its probable if they plan on doing a quite large change to the current specs. free re-specs have happened in the past.

It's a random chance to be dismounted, lower level mobs should not aggro (level dependant) unless you run right into them.

Rested xp is gained when in a friendly town (not sure if any town or just your factions capital), you can also pitch tents from the survival craft and when nearby your tent you begin aqquiring rested xp i believe.

    1. We get some kind of defensive CDs with the new calling. And nothing forces you to use the harbinger. Also, you might have your spec all figured out but it's going to be months before SL comes out and in case you haven't heard, all the trees are going to change. I'm assuming we'll get all our trees reset, personally.

    2. Very good question and I have no idea. I think you have to pass a dismount resist or something and when it fails you're dismounted.

    3. You can gain rest exp in sanctum, ember watch, fortune's shore and whitefall, I think. There's a cap and it increases at the same pace. You can also get some if you use tents or sleeping bags anywhere just not as fast)

You will get a free respec in Storm Legion, because they give you a respec every time they add/remove point abilities, and they're shifting Spark at the least.

Also, it's not like it's hard to write out where you have your points spent.

You may have things figured out now, but everything will be changed in the new expansion. Skills and talents will move up and down the trees which will make everything you've ever done or known in Rift a LIE!!! I wouldn't be able to see them not making you respec since everything from the ground up will be changing, not just the tail end of all the skill trees, and the new harbinger tree. It wouldn't be the same spec anyway, if it makes any sense.

So naturally to think that you aren't going to be forced into a respec would be crazy, might even give you a chance to check out a viable DPS build of some sort that's useful for more than just outdated dungeons and stuff.

1, The new soul (Harbinger) has plenty of tallents & skills to increase parry (10%*) and dodge (20%*), reduce incoming damage (% based absorbtion shield for the next 7 hits when improved with talents*) and a good amount of self healing (something like 2 - 3% of your hp each swing when using the self healing orientated Life Axe buff*), over all it's no more squishy then any other melee soul (and a good deal less squishy then some of them).

Your roles will likely be reset due to the vast number of changes being made to each soul in Storm Legion, you're free to make your roles according to how you want to play, you won't be forced to use any soul so you can continue using the combo you currently use with no problems.

2, Your level compaired to a mobs level determins the range at which that mob will 'agro' onto you, the higher your level compaired to the mob's level the shorter that distance is, at level 50 you only get a level 1 mob's attention when your practically touching them.

Being dismounted is a chance on being hit with 60% speed (Skittish) mounts being the most likely to dismount and 110% speed (Sturdy) being the least likely, I don't know the exact % for each mount type but it's common to take 4 or 5 hits before dismounting on a 110% speed mount.

3, You accrue rested xp while in your faction's head quarters (Sanctum or Meridian), in a 'Public House' in any town area and (to a lesser degree) whilst logged out, you get a dark blue eclipsed moon icon whilst in a rested area to show you're gaining rested xp.

As Warbs mentioned you can also use items crafted with the Survival skill to gain the rested buff too (with a different icon though), Bedrolls grant the rested buff to just you and Tents grant the buff to your entire party or raid, higher skill items last longer before dissapearing and rested buffs from different items & areas do not stack, you only gain the benifit from the highest buff.

As far as I'm aware, the cap to rested xp is 1.5 levels (at level 50) but i beleave you can hold more rested bonus at lower levels (up to 2.5 levels at level 1 i think), your rested xp is only consumed on player and monster kills so gaining xp through other methods (like quest rewards) push your rested bonus ferther up your xp bar which makes it look like you've gained more rested when it's really just moved along your bar rather then being consumed.

Hope this cleares a few things up for you!

    Fana.

*(DISCLAIMER: figures for the Harbinger soul based off of skills and tallents shown the mage soul reveal video and are likely to be adjusted before release.)

A mage tank would work much the same way as a rogue tank vs cleric/warrior tanks. Clerics and warriors absorb damage by blocking with armor and shields, rogues avoid damage by not getting hit in the first place...

Mage tanks don't work because they don't and won't exist, unlike the several alternatives that are very much a reality. Plus mage tanks wouldn't have any toughness since there isn't cloth toughness gear, but I guess people can dream still I suppose...

1: The Harbinger soul has been very well developed, and will work just fine in close quarters combat, you could have just watched the videos plastered all over the place, instead of assuming Trion was quite possibly going to release a melee mage that got destroyed in melee range.

Free respec? It costs a max of 50g, I don't see why a free respec would ever be needed.

2: There's essentially a "Chance to be dismounted" with every hit taken, sometimes you're lucky, and are long gone without procing that chance, sometimes the first hit from a level 5 will cause it.

3: Rested exp, you gain rested exp while your character is in a "safe" zone, even while logged off. Many towns (usually the larger ones) will give you rested exp for being in them, however not all of them do at this point. To check if your current location is giving rested exp, look at your buff bar for a greenish symbol, that on mouseover says something along the lines of "You feel rested", this means you are slowly gaining rested exp.

EDIT: And no there is no cap, as long as you can gain exp, you can gain rested exp, meaning you can have 3 PA bars worth of rested exp for instance, when you level up, the rested exp marker will already be at the end of the bar.

It's just magical that people jump on the forums making assumptions without doing any research at all. These threads are my favourite.
