    I always thought it was the source stone that protected the island.

    but on a similar note, I thought the op was asking about the statue out front when you first cross the bridge. That looks like an epic fight between two messangers ... I am curious about its story too.

    That statue is very impressive. The Defiants got a hole in the ground.

    The statue of the warring Messengers in front of the bridge? It used to be a fountain I think and got changed during either the River of Souls or Waves of Madness event. During the event there was a corrupted source stone in the middle so that it appeared that the messengers were attacking it rather then each other.

    The defiants occupy a city that was once a major stronghold of the Abyssal Cult of Akylios, so "a deep hole in the ground" is actually kind of appropriate...
