Default So what's with all the passive erotica in Rift?

Female Guardian guards are busting out of their tops.

Most all female NPC's are wearing clothes 2 sizes too small for them or thongs.

    Now this.

What's going on at Trion? Who is Rift's target audience? Where is the line drawn between art and decency?

Personally I think it's too much and should be addressed. It's starting to turn me off to Rift as it resembles a strip club more and more.

Apparently Trion wasn't happy with me backing them up, cause I'm sure I had a post here before..

That thread was deleted because it discussed moderation. This is a new thread.

Trion’s Rift, the newest competitor in the MMORPG market, is fresh out of its launch month and has just released its first major content update. The game has become widely known for taking the best parts of previous MMOs, mashing them together in new ways, and polishing it all to a high shine. However, as the players gain access to more of the game’s content and as the developers patch in more, we’re beginning to see that they’ve also decided to incorporate some of the same old and tired tropes about representing women and female characters into the game. In particular, the idea that women are mainly there to be sexy with their heroism coming secondary to that.

The game's rating varies upon location of course but it ranges from "12+" through to "Teen" and "Mature".

As for the art style then it does seem to be a common theme amongst developers in the fantasy genre to make the female outfits quite seductive and sparse you could say. You could look at a game such as WoW where it is most definitely not noticeable through to AoC where nudity is allowed along with engaging in adult relations with NPCs.

Rift sits in the middle of those two examples and I wouldn't wish to see it stray too close to either. Taking the GSB Chronicle as an example and Prince Hylas' conversation with Shyla then it is very clear indeed which sexual act they are speaking of. Personally I have never witnessed a negative reaction to this with everyone thus far finding it highly amusing.

In the end it doesn't particularly bother me at the moment as long as they continue to keep things relatively subtle and minor.

The problem with that train of thought is that "sexy" is a relative term that is constantly pushing the edge (ie. yesterday's "hooker-wear" are tomorrows common fashions), so I foresee things getting worse in that respect.

That pic of Crucia is a prime example of "pushing the edge."

    I don't even.

You can't stand NPC not having too many clothes yet 95% of the players are half naked in the game. I swear last raid I was the only one in full armor, and my character is a Female Mathosian.

I actually have nothing to say more, this post baffles me, brutal stupidity that is.

As seen here, the way crucia was depicted is fairly common.

Hopefully that link doesn't get me in trouble since I know Trion is pretty cool with the discussion of other games, but it was the most similar image I could think of.

You are running to the other extreme with your argument which is "brutal stupidity" in itself.

Unfortunately, much like "common" sense, "common" decency isn't so common either.

What ******* extreme ? I'm just saying that whining because our mind find body anatomy beautiful is completely stupid.

What you can't stand a pair of breasts ? Or a leg ? Or whatever that look likes skin ?
Would you be happier if every man in the game was also half naked ? I wouldn't mind, a lot of the armors already have that feature.

It's game design peeps, it won't change and there's only a minority of people actually not happy about this.

It's completely ridiculous and even teenage males don't care that much. Really Trion, they don't. Make them kickass first, THEN sexy, and they'll care even more about your game.

However, this is how I feel about some of the examples:

Crucia(?) - Honestly, not a major major deal, but if this is Crucia, I imagined someone looking at least 5-10 years older. Not exactly middle-aged at all, but certainly more 'wise woman' looking than a humanoid version of Laethys (the golden and elaborate queen). In fact, change the purple of this figure to golden and bronze etc, and you have what I'd imagine Laethys to look like, not Crucia.
But Crucia don't need no armor though. She and Laethys are probably all about being beings that get worshipped. Crucia is fine enough kicking *** in her dragon form.

Messenger - Some elements are awesome. Some are totally stupid, like... hello boobs. Lame. Super lame. And not sexy. Rest of it is mostly good enough.

Ethian male/female - Some is ok. Much of it is pathetic. Really Trion...

NPC Guards - This is the WORST example, especially with Meridian guards. Totally pathetic. I'd rather the NPC women get changed into, you know, actually wearing Defiant armor. Kplease? ...Please?

Shyla - Forget the 'sex appear' part, her character model was always bad, and weirdly bubblegum. There's still time to completely replace it since she's only in Mathosia, Silverwood, GSB, and Sanctum. Do it.

Asha - You know what? I like hers. It seems to just fit her and the idea of her character. Thumbs up. If only more random NPCs of Rift looked as good as her.

Mona - I'm good with Mona. I'm very very glad they redid her and many other Kelari for 1.6. Also Thumbs up. On the other hand, Kaspar, while having a 'better' model, looks kinda silly - I'll wait and see about him in the future though. Um... maybe in an Earth Saga this year? Yes?

"Lord of the Rings Online, Everquest 2, and others have shown that an MMO can be very successful without having to rely on gender-specific and sexualized armors or sexist easter eggs to draw an audience in. Having those things in the game really does send out the message that the women and female characters in the game are primarily there to be sexy or for the sexual pleasure of others, while the men are just there to be heroic. It also sends the message to the women playing the game that they are still not the intended or preferred audience, and that they’re only allowed into the boy’s club if they’re willing to go along with or ignore the sexism. Both of these messages are alienating to a large, and ever growing, portion of the player base and perpetuates the sexism within gamer culture as a whole."
^And this, I entirely agree with.

Rift is a lot of things, good things, but I immediately noticed its weird focus on the breasts. It's a miracle that the female veteran reward armor turned out to be much more appropriate than the actual Meridian NPCs.

But Crucia.. I'm ok with Crucia. So far. Kinda.
