I have to agree, DStruct. Granted, I wouldn't say they are necessarily "dull and miserable" but there is something that feels off about the combat animations. It's really hard to put my finger on and some races are worse than others. I tend to find myself being forced to play female dwarfs as they, in my opinion, are animated best.

Despite others poopoo'ing the OP, I think he definitely has a point and it's one of the reasons I quit back in May. I really want to like Rift, as I find the environment's graphics beautiful, the soul system is a really neat idea, and I like the rift invasions (although they were a lot cooler when the population was high at release).

People complain about Rift's quests being very generic and they're right. But I think that would be okay if the combat in the game was more engaging. I just feel like I'm mashing buttons and my character performs an action on screen which sometimes just doesn't feel like it's quite synched to the ability. I'm not talking about lag, it's the animations themselves that don't "feel" like they are attached to the key press or ability in some ways. So, as a result, the leveling experience becomes a bit of a drag as you're compounding generic-feeling quests with unexciting combat.

I appreciate what Rift is, even though it's a bit of a WoW clone in ways. Trion is one of the very few companies to put out a MMO that actually feels polished, well programmed (take a look at the crap that is SWTOR), and the devs genuinely seem to care about their game. I hope they have plans in the future, either with an update or possibly an expansion, to take a hard look at the character animations and do some tweaks.

    Thanks for reading.

In all honestly, I probably wont resubscribe RIGHT NOW, but theres no other MMO for me atm, theres only SWTOR and WOW that really interest me but WOW is seriously old content so I dont feel thats worthy of paying for no more and SWTOR I own but only played the first free month, I dont feel thats worthy of paying for another month either.

Im beyond happy with RIFT, its simply the animations that kill it for me, like someone said.. just doesnt look as though your actually fighting, kills the gameplay experience for me personally.. so I just dont feel like paying £9 a month, Could buy a budget game every month for that price or a new premium every other month for that price.. so yeah,

Yes you guys are right it was my opinion, however Im clearly not alone in this thread as you can see

Alot are agreeing with me, alot are against it but I reckon some of them are secretly in denial and just wont admit it because they dont want to criticize the game.. scared of other MMO fanboys reading the truth or something I dont know? Only way I can see it though is if enough people do agree, and do want this, then the quicker TRION will reqognise the need to improve it, and so the more likely they will do it faster.......

Basically, ok yes this is IMO, and I dont mean to be rude here but I only say this is because It bothers me that much I cannot understand how anyone could disagree, so imo you are only disagreeing for the sake of it and like I said above, because you are in denial or just dont want other MMO fanboys to read your post slagging RIFT off......... because quite frankly you are blind if you dont think the combat animation in RIFT is poor

No offenses intended on that last paragraph, just speaking my mind though. Please dont flame

There have been many changes to spell effects and I think a few to animations, also some models have been redone. I believe this is a sort of long-term ongoing project.
You can play WoW in any MMO. You don't have to play WoW in RIFT. Oh, and no, RIFT is not a WoW clone. Not having fun any more? Learn to play, noob! I don't speak for Riftui, but I moderate stuff there. Got ideas for improving the RIFT community? Feel free to PM me. Just came back? Welcome back! Here's what's changed.

I did notice this also. I played the beta and had some issues with the game, played the free 3 day and decided to give it a shot. Specifically, I remember thinking about the animation for the mage I am playing hitting something with the staff. I mean really, it's in slow motion. If someone tried to smack someone with a staff at that speed, I could probably block that by catching the staff with my teeth and biting it! GRRR. Really though, it just looks lethargic. There's no snap or force implied at all.

As far as killing my enjoyment of the game, I don't really feel that way. I suppose if the combat seemed more visceral it may draw me into it more though. Actually I think I may have complained a bit about this same thing, regarding animations, back in beta.

So while I think it is a point of contention, I wouldn't make a decision to leave over it personally. Redoing animations is not unheard of. Everquest did it a few times, not in the first year though.

I have to agree with the OP. The graphics of RIFT are really awesome, but I don't understand why they put like no effort at all into the animations. Combat skills, melee attacks and casts are so boring.

As a PvP'er I have to say, that fights don't feel any smooth and impressive at all. Sadly!

Must have fluffy unicorns and grandiose animations that do not suit abilities.
    Must have pandas.
Must try not to laugh at stupid thread.

I play a Riftblade, she spins with around with swords flaming , lightning flashes, things die, she jumps 20m into combat landing with a crunch of bones and a pleasing thump.

I am happy with Riftblade animations.

Leaving a game just because the animations don't fit your "taste"? Good luck, then. I personally like the graphics in this game, different style from your general MMORPG...guess its like others have said, personal taste.
