UPDATE: Someone suggested using Xpadder which I tried then made a guide on using it which can be found here: Guide to playing Rift on a controller.

Nope. But then again, I hate them and would never use them for anything.
eeeww no.
And it is SPECIFICALLY not pacifically... that's not even a word, Pacific is an ocean. I don't like when people do that...
Keyboard works fine for this game.

Will you be able to use a controller? I hate useing the keyboard to control any game. I feel more in control when using a controller. If no controller abilities then I might pass on the purchase of RIFT.
I am sure you could but I don't think it is going to be the best way to play the game.

Worst idea ever.... Leave the kiddie controllers to GW2 and DCUO ill pass..![]()
The Xbox controller has like 8 buttons total, no way could you play with it.
More like 16 buttons... and button-combinations are much easier on a controller... but still I would prefer a keyboard... controllers always give me a hectic action-game feeling and I want to play Rift as a nice mmorpg![]()

I too prefer to play with a combination controller and keyboard. I will try and set up on and post my "how to" if successful. I have played many MMOs with a controller instead of a keypad and have kept up with the best of them. Everyone has their own playstyle. And just as many would refuse to play a PC game if it were controller only, I would refuse to play a PC game that is keyboard only.
I dont support bothering putting this option in for rift, but, really, there is nothing 'kiddie' about controllers. they are just an alternative control method. Its really just a daft thing to say.
There actually used to be a time when we all had joysticks etc plugged into our PCs. I really don't know how this attitude towards them has come around :/
Incorrect. With proper pad mapping software you can make some as toggles. This means you can have alternate sets of controls (some trigger/bumpers) mapped on the same buttons, switching while holding a trigger/bumper down. Champions Online manages this natively and does so well; other games may require a program like Switchblade or XPadder if they're not particularly compliant.
While some skills require the use of a mouse interface potentially for targeting, there are ways to also toggle mouse cursor control through a pad. That COULD get a bit tricky, but a person who's dedicated to using a controller for RIFT might be able to find a way around that.
As for the why that some people might want to use a controller, consider that there are folks with various conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome who would find it much more comfortable to use an ergonomic gamepad. We're not working with Atari sticks with a single button anymore, folks. Where there's a will, there's a way to alternate command input methods.
I don't use controllers for MMOs generally speaking, and I don't think rift has any built in support for them.
The default xbox360 controller drivers in windows don't have support for it, but there are 3rd party/fan made apps which allow you to map your controller keys/combinations to keystrokes on your keyboard (Left thumbstick up = W etc) which you could use for this. I can't remember the name of any at the moment, I'll do a quick search around and post back if I find the one I used to use.
ah, here they are, these are the two that I've used before:
Xpadder, which I believe is free
and Pinnacle Game Profiler, which is not, but does have a trial so you can see if it is worth it .. a month I think.
=======EDIT=====
Just realized theClockmaker beat me to the punch with xpadder, but now there are three options![]()
