You're right I didn't (demmit, curse my rubbish memory) but does anyone remember those "choose your own story" books when you were a kid? You chose one direction and it gave you a completely different story from another direction you might have chosen. I think the options in MMOs has mostly been "the nice answer" the "neutral answer" and the "jerk answer" - which never really did much other than slightly work your faction to the character you were relating to, and some people chose the jerk answer just because they wanted to see what would happen if they did. I seem to recall that this was mentioned as an example but I'm going to try and search the article down.
This has several different applications for Rift (and I'm just postulating now); you already choose a pretty basic premise to this just by choosing faction - t
here's a few tidbits in this article in which Scott has mentioned that the Defiant have managed to botch the world a bit with some of their bigger scientific messups but, simply, they just don't care. If the "choose your own adventure" premise is part of Rift, I could see that being part of the Defiant might make certain npcs react to you in certain ways. Also, it's been mentioned that NPCs may have goals of their own - which may mean that we can expect NPCs to lie to us, perhaps. If so what would buying that lie entail as repercussions? And of course, there's the rifts themselves; would we actually bother to take a Rift down, or would we decide to let it go because we would hope to have more leet content if we did? But what if it went too far and then the NPCs started getting angry that we weren't actually doing our jobs? That sort of thing.
I think it might be interesting to see what happens with all those wanna-be "EVIL MWAHAHHA" people who then suddenly realise that they can't go into certain villages and trade because of what they did in a fit of Evilness to the last npc's they were interacting with. No QQ allowed; do the crime, do the time. It might be worth really considering if you "just want to see" what happens if I just kill this NPC and take his wallet; botch your character up badly and you may have a hard road straightening it out. Faction may have more weight in Rift than we previously thought and it would be cool to see if our actions actually really did matter.
