There is definitely some truth to this. The only flaw is that being an ******* sometimes goes too far and you lose essential people to the coarse attitude. All comes down to what you're looking to accomplish, really.
I would say the harsh leader has more efficiency, but sometimes less longevity. Then again, there is a difference between being a straight up ******* and being to-the-point with no apologies.
There is a difference between being an ahole raid leader and being a strong raid leader who genuinely cares about winning and knows how to get the best ouf of his players. The former has no regard for the players and the latter actually gets results and people want to do their best. They do their best to not get yelled at and look like an idiot in front of the rest of your peers and because they don't wanna fail that person.
False dichotomy. You can be a strong raid leader who genuinely cares about winning and knows how to get the best out of your players and still be a giant a-hole.
Which seems to be the case. In my experience, needing an abusive raid leader is a sign that the members do not particularly care about the guild, only themselves. The abuse keeps them doing what is right for everyone and not just what's right for them. It's a way of controlling selfish players with huge egos.
With the right roster, you don't need that.
I mean, I guess it would just be a guy who you know, grabs bananas and runs. Or, um, a banana that grabs things. I don’t know.
Why would a banana grab another banana? I mean, those are the kind of questions I don’t want to answer.
I can tell you after a 26 year military career involving a few war zones there's a lot of truth to this (with a caveat). Being firm and demanding gets results, but being respectful at the same time (to followers) gets loyalty. The best leaders I served under, and tried to emulate, were firm and demanding and made me feel like they cared about me. Each of us felt the same way about them and would suffer for them.
But there were also leaders (some successful) who thought being a jerk was leading, and thought yelling at and insulting followers was motivating. In my experience followers would be disloyal to that leader as soon as things went bad. A firm glare is all I ever needed.

My name is Byona,
I am level 50,
My eyes are swollen..
I cannot see.
I must be stupid,
I must be bad,
What else could have made,
My leader so mad?
I wish I were better,
I wish I weren't ugly,
Then maybe my leader,
Would still want to hug me.
I can't do a wrong,
I can't speak at all,
Or else I'm locked up,
All day long.
When I'm awake,
I'm all alone,
The house is dark,
My folks aren't home.
When my leader does come home,
I'll try and be nice,
So maybe I'll just get,
One whipping tonight.
I hear a car
My leader is back,
From an invasion attack.
I hear him curse,
My name is called ,
I press myself,
Against the wall.
I try to hide,
From his evil eyes,
I'm so afraid now,
I'm starting to cry.
He finds me weeping,
Calls me ugly words,
He says its my fault,
He suffers when raiding.
He slaps and hits me,
And yells at me more,
I finally break free,
And run to the door.
He's already locked it,
And I start to bawl,
He takes me and throws me,
Against the hard wall.
I fall to the floor,
With my bones nearly broken,
And my leader continues,
With more bad words spoken.
'I'm sorry!', I scream,
But it's now much to late,
His face has been twisted,
Into a unimaginable shape.
The hurt and the pain,
Again and again,
O please God, have mercy!
O please let it end!
And he finally stops,
And heads for the door,
While I lay there motionless,
Sprawled on the floor.
My name is Byona, I Am level 50,
Tonight my leader, kicked me.
See you all in Wildstar!
Lets keep the discussion on topic and civil.

Being the Raid Leader of my own guild and having military experience I can attest to this 100%. It has served me well in the past and will continue to serve me well in the future. After our brief hiatus due to military obligations Ive had 13 of my 20 core raiders return. Some of them from much more established raiding guilds. If that doesn't show loyalty, well then i guess i don't know the definition. How i see it is this, there is a time to yell, and there is a time to be nice, but it all needs to be done respectfully and with tact.
p.s. Hi RR, how you been? <3
