Because meleeing as a Red Mage in FFXI was hawtness.
Unless you're a sin/rs, being melee as a rogue is just as unfriendly as it would be for a mage. Mages and rogue dps have a similar hp pool and pretty much all non-avoidable damage (aka get out of stupid mechanics) is nonphysical, so armor doesn't matter. Let's just hope they don't fail for mages like they did for rogues where you do at best as much ST dps as a cleaving warrior but have no aoe to speak of, no utility, generally positional requirements, and suffer tremendously from anything resembling switching targets.
For pvp they just need a unique style of gap closers and some CC/snares with maybe a little added survival, not like it wouldn't be mixed with something else anyways (low dom for squirrel til you get in melee).

I've never seen any kind've mage/wizard/sorcerer rest his staff like that on his hands. It's always vertical or at an angle but never resting on his hands horizontal.This is how you are supposed to hold a Staff. Two hands, spread out like that.
It is a sword and this is how people in rift carry a sword. After all the bickering to change animations back in beta, I doubt they're gonna do it for the expansion so I wouldn't use that as a counter argument with a 100% backing.

Trion doesn't have to nerf mage melee.
Just keep making ID type Bosses where you are punished for being melee.
Melee toons in Rift come pre-nerf right from Trion.
Think about it. Who many fights in Rift do you say, "We HAVE to have X melee."
The answer would be none. Now say, "We HAVE to have X range."
Scary isn't it.
You can do every Boss in Rift without 1 melee other than a tank. Very poor design.
Didn't they say that mages had been complaining about lack of survivability and they were going to improve that?
My guess is some melee dps type with magic shields that increase resists/armor. Which I would personally love, as long as it's done well, if it improves my soloability. I know you can 'farm' with a mage, but it requires having all those shield essences for it to be really efficient. Every time I play my rogue I'm just disgusted at how easy it is to solo in comparison. Considering all the leveling and farming we'll have to do in SL, it's just what I want right now.
OH well we'll know in 3 days!
