Default Are there any useful mage-specs for warfronts out there?

I have a level 50 mage that is terrible in warfronts.

The dilemma seems to be very weak defenses.

I may be able to dish out some punishment, but all it takes is a few swipes from a warrior or other class, and I'm down.

Does anyone have a good mage-warfront, defense heavy spec they can share?

I get the feeling you are new to warfronts and have little valor.

Its like that for a while unfortunately. There aren't really defensive heavy specs for mages as our mitigation is pretty low across the board. Personally i would look at running a chloro/dom spec in warfronts for the first few ranks. You're not goin gto do much in the way of damage unless in a ranked warfront so its a better bet to help keep alive the guys who can. in low rank warfronts you can always have an alt dps spec to kill a few when you can.

The key is staying the hell out the way of the enemy dps while helping you're own team as much as possible. The endurance boost in chloro (touch of nature?) helps with survivability a little. You can also drop 11 in pyro for flicker or drop some points in SC for ride the wind.

Mages lack the defensive soul that other callings have, and the Diminishing Returns Patch of Doom crippled most magic-based defenses, so they're always going to be the weakest.
The healer soul is relatively weak in PvP compared to clerics, but it can be useful.
Outside of healing, the only real option is an all out offense. 51 Pyromancer works well, and various Stormcaller-based builds also work when you have enough AoEing opportunities (library, port scion).
Avoid Archon, Elementalist and Necromancer, and Warlock is only good as a secondary soul. Dominator can be good as well.

I think a mage's motto for PvP should be your best defense is a great offense. Kill them before they get to you because in the land of DRs and warriors and rogues that are like gnats just constantly porting on top of you... you have no defense. Chloro/dom is as defensive as it gets with maybe a little into ele to get the shield.

    32 chloro 2 archon 32 warlock

Try that for a survivability spec.

Mages are gimped right now but if you "kinda" want to tank and do some killing whilst supporting heals then chloro-lock isnt too bad.

If you're low on valor (rank1 pvp items/set only), you should just go glass cannon build (51 pyro 15lock) with 4 piece pyro crystal on and smash **** out of everybody. You won't survive too much anyway
Why? because rank1 set gives very low stats and is not really worth using over normal pve gear (unless you're fresh 50ish and not geared aswell).

You really want to go with pyrodom, there are a few good guides out there I think (here's one! http://forums.riftgame.com/rift-gene...vp-guide.html? But basically I would highly recommend this class to new mages, it offers the best utility options AND some of the best burst for mages, and if you understand the spec it is less rank oriented than some others like chlorodom which rely more strongly on defensive gearing. I would start out with some of the higher point pyro options until you get used to the moveset and then move into more split pyro and dom- the main point of the spec is being able to capitalize on the transmorgify cast speed buff (usually can throw in 4 spells before it expires) offensively, and space well defensively (using flicker for spacing/escape and deny to clear enemy dots). It has a lot of depth, but its probably a lot easier to get well with in warfronts then other mage specs where there is usually a lot less margin for spacing errors, or in the case of stuff like chlorodom where you have to know and pull off your moveset over a longer period of time.

Pyro/dom is the best spec mages have for the WF. Just remember mages are not meant to go toe to toe with other classes, distance is your friend. Learning how to move right is key to effective mage PvP.

I just hope the upcoming expansion does not destroy the pyro/dom spec.

I can't remember the last time a Warrior killed me. You need to rank up, otherwise you're just a speed bump like all low rank players.

51 Pyro, 35/31 Pyro/Dom, and 45/21 Pyro dom are all among the best pvp specs in the game, for any class. Chloro/Dom, and 51 Dom are both great support specs that can still help your team win even if you never get a KB.

I been trying out chlorodom pyrodom and chlorolock on my now rank 12 mage and they all can be effective

it really depends more on gear and rank, if there are alot of high ranked players on the other team who notice your low health pool you will spend most of the match respawning, on the flipside though, I got a few rank 1 - 12 matches the other day and completly wrecked the other team, it became apparent pretty quickly that I wasnt dieing to anyone in those matches. I don't think the bolstering works as well as it could.

I lilke chlorolock for the extra health (I'm gunna die but your gunna spend more GCD's killin me) and healing, sometimes i even manage to save a few people and make a difference yay

the fear from warlock is useful and I see immune immune immune a lot less than i do with squirral

I throw in stormcaller as the 0 point soul for the knockback.

It could be a learn2play issue but I found at low rank my damage spells did a laughably small amount of damage, but then I am still learning to PVP

    I've always run with 33 Chloro / 33 Warlock / 0 Stormcaller.

Good heals, Some DPS, although you're not really going to kill anyone, but massive survivability. Best used taking vessels in the library.
I also tend to cleanse a lot which doesn't show up in any scoreboards, but helps a lot when your heals are down.

Disagree, archon/ele works very well with 51 pyro. You can pick up 5% crit, 8% mitigation, ignite, revitalize,
5% fire, consuming flames, ashen defense, flowing sand, and still get all of 51 pyro's toys. This is my favorite warfront spec when I have healer support.

As a lower rank mage, I would use some variation of chlorolock, chlorodom, or... well that is it. As you get up in rank, you could start branching into using pyrodom or pyrolock, but be ready to get meleed into the dirt. I was lucky enough to rank up with the masses from release on to now, so I really don't know what its like for lower ranked mages nowadays. But my suggestions stand.

Default My Mage isn't good...and I've tried different specs.

I have tried several different specs...for my mage character in PVP. Everytime...it only take's a couple of swipes from one warrior to knock me out of the game to res again. It can be very frustrating. I can do some damage, but unless you have a good defense...you're going to be constantly weak one on one, or more than one on one in warfronts. My healing doesn't happen fast enough to help either.
