Why bother rolling a mage over a cleric?

When a cleric does even on par/better damage and has far better defenses then a mage ever could? Once I hit 50 on my Eth mage, I quit. I went back to my cleric and haven't looked back.

Massively superior mobility and CC management in PvP.

Playstyle centered around active casting instead of passive buffs/procs.

A for-real support soul with group buffs that are actually fairly game-changing in a group of sufficient size.

If your warrior tank fails at life (or any tank) your gonna be tanking as a mage anyway :P
