I like the Rogue with a staff idea. Could be fun for the animation team.

How about a Warrior soul with some self/party/raid healing? Make it indirect healing as a percentage of damage like a shadow priest from wow or a disciple of kahne (sp?) from WAR. Blood Knight or somethin'.

If this rumour of an expansion for rift is true, part of the rumour was of 4 new souls, i can only imagine in the interests of fairness that it will be 1 for each of the classes, so you "MAY" get your wish sometime in the future.

Archmage for mage is the only obvious one i could think of but maybe too obvious i dunno

Aye, it's pretty much confirmed there's going to be new souls "soon" thanks to a mysterious box sent to PC Gamer full of hints, one of them being four shoe soles. I was really hoping to find more discussion on what the new souls could possibly be, but that 24 page thread seemed little more than a flame war between people for and against a PvE level cap increase.

I do recall some intrepid posters talking about what they thought it might be; someone brought up the "Social Souls" Trion at one point apparently mentioned wanting to implement. However, this here thread seems more aligned with what I wanted out of the other one, which is possibilities for new combat oriented souls.

TLDR on bottom for those not into much of a read on Monday XD

I'm a Mage player, so I'm just going to discuss that, and I think that if we get new combat oriented souls instead of social ones we're going to get a melee based one, or if Trion wants to keep the Mages where they're at in terms of available roles a healing soul I think would be most welcome. The aforementioned Archmage Filk brought up I like in terms of healing; direct heals and shield effects that come from the manipulation of temporal energies (ie, resetting the target's body to before the axe-in-the-head incident or opening a small portal to a pocket dimension the axe swings through instead of the head).

As for a melee/tank soul, the two can be one if done right but it would take a lot of work. I'm going to use an element based thought process since while I believe mech suits would work well, Guardians are not the biggest fans of magitech. Early on in the soul there could be an ability that transforms the caster into a fire elemental, around level 16 or so an earth based one, and deeper in the tree a water form. Fire would of course be for mlee DPS, Earth for melee tanking, and Water for ranged tanking.

Fire would be the hardest I think to mesh with other souls; it could make all spells from other soul trees instant cast and melee range, with channeled spells acting similar to the way they do now just without the range, and targeted AoE spells self bound instead. Spells with longer cast times could possibly receive a cooldown, or perhaps the cast time is replaced with a cooldown. This would be a challenge to work out with souls that have some spells that have no cooldown, but are a dps loss to use without instant cast procs (such as Stormcaller and Icicle/Cloudburst). It could also do with a gap closer, but that might be a tad much for PvP.

Fire could also simply disallow the use of most spells from other trees and use only spells from the melee soul tree itself, but that would essentially force people who want a melee mage to go 51 or bust which is bad for folks that love hybrid specs (myself not among them).

Earth and Water would use spells from the soul itself that change functionality based on the form used, and be unable to cast most spells from other trees (a possible exception is the Archon self buffs). For example a spell that works like a melee range cleave in Earth would instead work like a 30 yard frontal volley in Water. The Earth form would need to work nearly as well as the current tanks do, since it would be the form used most often. Water would be used for fights like King and Prince, where one boss is deadly to melee but still needs a durable raid member to take the beatings.

As for how this tank/melee soul fit into PvP, not sure. I don't really touch the stuff. But the Archmage could do extremely well I think, given that since it doesn't do damage to heal it isn't being double taxed by PvP reductions. And just imagine the Archdominator! A 3x/3y mix would make for one awesome healer and harasser. Insta-squirrel a foe beating up on a retreating team mate, followed up by a few swift heals... now there's a combination I believe I would thoroughly enjoy.

TLR, as a Mage I would prefer either a tank/melee soul or a healing soul that deals in direct heals and shields. Tank/melee from a PvE perspective, and direct healer from a PvP point of view.

After giving this much serious thought, here's my $.02 worth...
Rogue - James Brown (Godfather of Soul)
Cleric - Blues Brothers (Soul Men)
Mage - Aretha Franklin (Queen of Soul)
    Warrior - Ichigo (Soul Society)

On that topic... I think soul specific weapons would be cool (because, for example, saboteurs would never actually use daggers, that's pretty counterproductive to throwing bombs, maybe special gloves of some kind?)

Also rogues need a healing spec that doesn't suck IMO...

There's honestly a lot they are going to have to change in the current souls when they give everyone 13-14 more talent points. The balancing between classes is going to shift so much. I hope they give the beta enough time to resolve all this before releasing it unbalanced in a giant failstorm along with the extra souls.

    My $.02

Mage - Tank: Spellshield-based tank with direct-threat (as opposed to indirect via overhealing, etc.. ), like you wished you had for Prince when you were progressing

Cleric - Combat Medic: Melee based healing that doesn't stack with Justicar. This would be the point of the soul, rather than a synergy with a tanking soul, so the healing would be slightly better and it would have the benefits of a short-cooldown battle-rez and a charge and blink to facilitate melee uptime.

Nothing solid for the other two yet...

As far as the mage is concerned i would love to have a Mesmer- (GW2) or Illusionist-Soul.

Also check out this link for my suggestion: New Calling: The Illusionist
