Are wands strictly for stat or does the damage type (fire/water/air..etc) really matter?
If I use heavy water damage in my abilities, should I have a water damage wand to enhance my damage is what I'm asking.

Wand damage has no effect on your ability damage. But! It can be nice to have a wand of a type you don't otherwise have in case of resistances. Not that much in Rift has noticeable elemental resists; they pointed out that it's simply not *fun* for players to be unable to use their abilities.
You can play WoW in any MMO. You don't have to play WoW in RIFT. Oh, and no, RIFT is not a WoW clone. Not having fun any more? Learn to play, noob! I don't speak for Riftui, but I moderate stuff there. Got ideas for improving the RIFT community? Feel free to PM me. Just came back? Welcome back! Here's what's changed. (NOTE NEW URL)
Wands are only for stats at the moment.
Their damage does not affect your spell's damage.
I hope that one day they will actually be useful and not useless.
In WoW they were a good way to do a some dps while conserving mana.
Seeing as Rift is easy-mode and all casters have infinite mana, it doesn't really matter for that.
You guys must not being doing it with raid buffs. I get a solid 80-100 dps from my ranged auto attacks.
Not sure if it's still possible, but fire wands used to proc pyromancer armor.
Try it out, it's funny. :P

If you macro startrangedattack after all your instant cast spells, and spam them in between GCDs, you will get wand blasts occasionally.
The first issue is it only works after instant or very fast casts, so the DPS won't be the same as just wand spamming raid buffed, however it can be 50 ish dps depending on spec (amount of instants used).
The second issue is, it seams to autotarget and wand stuff, even if smarttarget is turned off, so it can be dangerous.
