I want to see corrupted Messengers (not just Deathtouched...)! And male versions! And various characters instead of a single title!

I'm a Defiant lore person at heart, but my main is a Guardian for a reason and the more I learn about the Vigil and directly interact with aspect of them, the more I enjoy the game.

To me, the Messenger of the Vigil is like a cross between Greece's Hermes and Christianity's "Holy Ghost". She performs a necessary function without claiming a direct identity, plus there's the neat fact that she can simultaneously exist in multiple places, for different functions, at the same time. She puts Orphiel's time travel to shame, lol.

I say that because consider, in Sanctum around the Idol of the Vigil (that big hovering chunk of pure Sourcestone that I totally just named right now) there are the Five Messengers, one each for Bahralt, Mariel-Taun, Thontic, Tavril, and Thedeor (a lot of "T" names...) who all spout a little sermon on what each of the Gods wants from the Guardians. You also have the "original" Messenger who hovers far above Cyril, Borinn, and Shyla, who proclaims that the Vigil chose these three to lead their Ascended army and their faithful.

Oddly there's also the Messenger of Tears who sits in the Sanctum gardens and actually looks like a huge squirrel. A possible example of the Messenger's shape-shifting powers? Who knows!
But seriously. If she can't kick Heretic/Cultist ***, then I don't know who can! You don't strap a pair of 4-foot blades to a blind angel's arms just for show, I tell ya (though let us not forget the statue of the Messengers carrying swords -- also awesome).

I think the Messanger of Tears relates to the Tears Artifact set you get by butching poor little criters. When I first saw it I though 'Great. Hear comes my Karma. I knew one day I would get my *** kicked by a giant squirrel for may critter killing ways.'

I get the impression their is more than one Messanger. I am curious on who exactly they are and if they ever actually do any fighting. The blades and the statue suggest that they are at least capable of it.

As for male messangers, the closest we have is Calwin. He seems to have many of the same abilities as the Messangers. Perhaps the messangers are all an earlier form of Ascended.

Well yeah, the Messenger of Tears is obviously a stab at your farming of animals to get that darn Artifact Collection. Shouldn't it have been a snake, though? =]

I'd have to say that if we do not see the Messengers fight within the near future, that they were once the Vigil's special forces in the time primordial -- when Telara was wild and needed taming, fresh after creation.

And yeah, Carwin is, functionally, a male Messenger of the Vigil. I really like the female version though, I think it'd be hard to make a male model without risking him either being stereotypical or effeminate. The "Valkyrie" role filled by the Messenger is awesome and badass, I'd like to see that stay as a unique piece of her identity. She is basically the entire capabilities of all Magitech (Ascension, time travel, smiting, information gathering, etc), rolled into one soft-spoken winged warrior. She's merely a fraction of the Vigil's power, and yet so far, she's been all that the Guardians have needed. You go girl.

I actually liken the Messengers to the Valkyries of Norse mythology. They're a bit more, let's call it, self-aware and brainy than typical Valkyrie; but, they are the supernatural messengers of the gods: just like the Valkyrie were for Odin.
