Default CONTEST: Build a Better Preset - Get your build in the game!

    CONTEST: Build a Better Preset
Get your build in the game!

While the preset system is fantastic way to introduce the complex soul system to newer users, it is in need of an update. To ensure that they’re the very best that they can be, we need your help. We want to put your builds in the game, credit them to you, and offer you prizes to boot!

In order to do this, we've prepared a form with all the required information, which will be in the next post.

    Dates:
Contest Opens: November 22th - Today! Now!
Contest Ends: December 3rd 10 AM PST

    Rules:
    • You may enter as many builds as you want.
    • You can win multiple times, and all those builds will be placed into the game!
    • Some prizes can be won multiple times, but others only once. Please see the Prizes section for details.
    • Please be sure you include a guide in addition to your build. That guide can be off site.
    • Judgement will be done by the community, for the community, done with polls broken up by Calling.
      • The top builds with the most votes will be put into the game.
      • Vladd, Kervik, and Daglar may also select some builds that they find noteworthy, too!
    • You may not enter a build that someone else created.

    Prizes:
    • All winners will have their build(s) added to the game as a preset!
      • Winners will be able to offer a descriptive name for the preset.
      • Your character's name and shard will be credited in the description.
    • All winners will earn a Hellbug or Ki Rin mount of their choosing.
      • Only 1 will be given to 1 character.
      • This prize can be won multiple times! If you win three times, you can pick 3 different mounts!
    • 30 Day Patron Pass
      • This prize can only be acquired once.
    • Winners will receive the prefix title "Soulmaster"
    • All participants will receive the title "the Soul Architect"

    Required Information

Before we get to the form, here is an overview of all the information we need to put your build in the game!

First is the basic information that’s shown to players when they are selecting their preset. Items 1 through 9 can be found in the screenshot above as an example.
    1. Preset Name: Your choice!
    2. Brief Description: Describe the build overall: what it’s best used for in a short overview! No more than 250 characters.
    3. Group Role: Tank, DPS, Heal, or Support
    4. Souls:
      1. Soul 1:
      2. Soul 2:
      3. Soul 3:
    5. Key Abilities: The top 3 more important abilities that keep this build going.
      1. Ability 1:
      2. Ability 2:
      3. Ability 3:
    6. Difficulty: Easy, Intermediate, or Advanced – keep in mind managing cooldowns, situational skills, and other traits.
    7. Basics: List important facts about this build: including best stats, ideal equipment, and other key components for success. No more than 250 characters.
    8. How to Play: Elaborate on the key attributes of the build (spell order, tactics, etc). No more than 250 characters.
    9. Tips: Max 2 lines per point, no more than 60 characters a line
      1. Tip 1:
      2. Tip 2:
      3. Tip 3:
    10. Minimum Level: The build will not show up in the preset list until this level.
    11. Build Guide: Please include a link to a guide you’ve created that details how to use your build. Linking an offsite one is okay too. It should include:
      1. Rotation(s)

      3. Links to any recommended addons.
      4. A general overview on how to best play.
      5. Gear recommendations.
      6. Situational abilities.
      7. Any other pertinent information needed to best play the build.
    12. Hot Bar Layout: List each ability that should be automatically placed. For leveling builds, include abilities available at the minimum level so that a player can kill mobs, even if at level 60 none of those abilities would be present on the hotbar.
      1. Slot 1:
      2. Slot 2:

    13. Build Specifics: Please list what soul the point(s) go to, as well as the appropriate trait name. Since presets are guided, order is very important! Even if your build is for level 60, you must fill the below information out.
      • Below level 50 you cannot have more points than your current level spent in an individual soul.
      • At and above level 50, you may have your level +1 points spent in a given soul.
      1. Level 1:
      2. Removed for length.

Question: is "naming" the preset really necessary? I think most people would agree the preset names are pretty ridiculous, and even with correct presets such as "Seraphic Guard," you do not see anyone in the entire game referring to it as such. They refer to it as your standard "Justicar" or "cleric tank spec."

The names don't have to be things along the lines of Seraphic Guard, but they're helpful. If we have 2 different Justicar builds that end up being added, there needs to be something in the name to differentiate between the two.

We have many guides on the forums already with information on the top builds and point spread distribution, as well as how to use these builds. Why not just collect the information and the developer/s for the presets can do this themselves instead of relying on a copy/paste from the players?

Or is this exactly what you guys are looking for?

Can we do more than one actionbar? Most specs can't fit in only twelve keybinds. For instance, Void Knight needs eight keybinds just for the 1-hour self-buffs. Bladedancer needs 7 buttons for the dances and poisons and 2 more for the AoE cooldowns, which does not leave you with enough space for the actual rotation. Et cetera.

Are these presets meant for leveling people or for level 60 people? I ask this because:

    1) level 60 people shouldn't necessarily use presets because they're either pvpers who experiment on their own or raiders who use the one optimum spec for the soul they want

    2) as was mentioned there are already a bunch of guides in the forums. Are people meant to submit all of those? Because after all, those guides belong to the specific person who made that guide. I'm not gonna submit Muspel's or Gery's guides (for example), but those are the optimum specs.

    3) optimum builds change based on buffs and nerfs, which necessitates changing the preset every time a soul gets tweaked. If they aren't tweaked, then it just leads to the same confusion as the current presets.

The only thing presets should be for are soloing purposes, or optimal point distibutions for specific levels)e.g. tankin on lvl 30...the other possible things should be gimmick specs that make fun AND work on your way to 60....

i hope thats the intention from trion

We'd rather pick the most up to date builds, that are the best in the eyes of the community. Additionally, the order to spend points is pretty important, and not something most builds cover!

At this time, I am afraid not, due to technical limitations. We do want to point people at the appropriate guide for that reason.

    1. People can submit a levelling build or a 60 only build-- this is determined by the minimum level.

    2. People should only submit builds they've made themselves, primarily because we're looking for builds + guides together.

    3. Understandable, and we'd like to see them updated, but I'll need to check with Kervik/etc to see if that's feasible, if the creator provides the updates. If this contest is successful, we may look into doing this again in the future.

We're looking for specs for a lot of purposes. I hope to see some levelling builds, some lower level tanking/healing builds, and a lot of solo things. Will builds always be better if you go to a frequently updated thread run by a highly intelligent theorycrafter? Yes. Always. Can we make the current ones better? Yes, and that's what we hope to do.

I think "You may not enter a build that someone else created" could end up being a real issue.

There's a certain logic to making good builds and the same build could quite legitimately have been discovered independently by numerous people. How on earth are you going to sort out ownership disputes??? It's not like there is a patent office where we can register 'discovery' of a build!

What might be interessting could be the date at which a premade build had been updated for the last time.

If this contest work well build will hopefully not be to much outdated as they could be quite regular event.

To answer my own point raised above, since there is no way to fairly establish who first came up with a particular build, if I were writing the rules of this competition I would have put:

"Where the same winning build is submitted by multiple people, the entries will be judged on the quality of the supporting material and the prize awarded accordingly. Trion will not enter into any discussion on the origins or creation of a build and all decisions of the judges are final."

    @Lightwell

A Telaran patent office would be silly. To expand upon it; Don't carte blanche rip off someone else's build and guide that already exists and submit it. If two identical builds get submitted but they came to exist independently, and have differing guides, that's fine. I like the addendum you've written, will add my own take on it. Thanks for the helpful critique!

    @fayeran

Good idea! Will pass it to Kervik & co.
