What really irritates me is that I have personally referred five people to this game, quite recently, not realizing this was finally going to come out, and now I've missed out on the neat prizes. Oh well, maychance I'll find some new friends that game and will leave WoW or try a new online game.
Any chance this will be retroactive? I can see the potential for abuse, so I doubt it, but maybe I'll get lucky LOL

Now that you have added a Free Trial feature that does not require an invite - https://uk.riftgame.com/en/products/mmo-free-trial/ It will be a lot harder to get new players via a refer a friend link.
You pretty much offer the "friend" nothing other then a title and ability to teleport.
I say friend as "friend" as most people will not have 3 people they 'know' who will buy Rift who do not yet already owbn it and will only be able to get the items via recruiting strangers.
I am just glad I referred 21 people before they added the Free Trial link.
Also now free trials are a permanent feature of the game what are you going to be doing to stop gold/plat spammers abusing them? I can think of lots of things you could do, just wish you would do at least one of them.

It is retroactive with the last free trial "refer a friend" they done for the RoS patch/event. So if you refferred people then it counts. Some people got all 3 items as soon as they released this refer a friend.Originally Posted by BipolarBimbo

I agree that this seems somewhat unfair to people who have already been on the game and referred friends. Trion has been super about rewarding the people who were here from the beginning, but this time they stopped short. I myself was recruited by a friend who recruited at least 3 other ppl but only one of them was as recently as the RoS patch.Though oddly, he shows 2 recruits, that person and himself. how does that work? Why didn't everyone who had already been here get a credit for themselves so they could at least have the corgi? if you do that for one, you should do that for all. Or if it is an error, i hate to see him lose the hat since i know he deserves the steed already.
I don't care about teleporting every thirty mins. I don't care about the friend list thing. just the goodies. and not even for myself but for the friend who worked hard to recruit others to this game. seems there should be a way to give credit to those people in some way.
My friends use Linux or Mac. since this patch ended the compatibility of emulators I don't think I'll be inviting anyone.

I understand the idea that making these rewards encourages people to get new accounts for Trion but at the same time it leans heavily toward the microtransaction model where players are rewarded for spending money.
I agree with it but at the same time I think the rewards should be available elsewhere as well, make everything in the game available for people to earn through play. Even if the requirements are mind numbingly involved there should be a way to earn it without having to spend money because whether it's your own money or a friends, it's still bought.
I see a reward like that in game and I feel like my account, my money, isn't worth enough to Trion for them to care and if I want something back from them I need to spend more money. It's just another way for a corporation to bully me in to feeling I need to buy something (or sell something) and of all places in a game world that I really enjoy.
Not a big deal but still I had hoped from my experience so far that Trion was going to sell it's game on merit instead of gimmicks and hype.
I too was referred by a friend I used to game with in EQ2. She told me about rift so I bought the game and joined maybe 3 weeks ago now. It would be nice if this was retroactive so she could get the credit. I even got one of my friends to join, let her make a toon and play it on my account while I was at work just a few days ago and her husband may join as well. Though now he can take advantage of the free trial instead of using my account lol.
I doubt they have put a whole lot of thought into the retroactive part of this or the impact it will have on the community that is already playing Rift. I think this is just a scramble to snatch those players SOE left hanging. Down for a week already and I hear they are estimating something like another month before they are online... let's just hope they think about those of us who are going to stay once SOE is back up and running.
