The just common sense, never been hacked, use 16 chars crowd are under the false assumption that most accounts are compromised as a result of brute force or keylogging. I'm pretty sure that the most common vector for the hackers is to use email/password combinations from defunct/hacked gaming sites and forums. It's a pain, but if you ever reuse a password, strong or not, from those sites for game/bank/email accounts you are likely vulnerable.
I've never been hacked myself, and I don't really want an authenticator, but I do worry about how much info I've left behind on guild sites and old boards, even if I don't use the same passwords.
Optional authenticators would be fine.
I've never been hacked but I know people who have and I wouldn't mind having the option for an authenticator. Even if 1% of people fall prey to a keylogger or fake account page then those are a lot of trashed accounts. Not to mention how it affects the in-game economy. Those items/plat are sold off and eventually, if the player is fortunate, their items are restored.

what's with everybody and saying silly things like 'if you practice good security you don't need an authenticator' if you practiced good security, then you would have an authenticator.

I change my password every 3 months (habbit from work), and regularly clean my system with my virus scanning. I keep the password seperate from other log-ons also. But I do have one security issue, I have kids that use the same computer. I am not watching them al the time to make sure they are not opening spam, or other security violations. I do educate them on that stuff, but kids will click 'ok' just to get the window out of the way.
A year ago, mt Lotro account was hacked, losing all my gold and equipment I worked hard for. But thank God my account was not deleated, and to make things worse, I was (sill am) athe kinship leader for my kinship. My kinship chests were also wiped out.
The bottom line is more security will not hurt, and an authenticator would be nice.
Agreed. A simple authenticator would go a long ways towards alleviating a lot of this hacking account stuff. People make mistakes and it sometimes costs them their account but an authenticator can do a lot to prevent those "mistakes".

I support this as well. Even if the manufacturing of a physical product is currently unavailable, at least an app for smart phones, and maybe, because this would leave some players out, an online app that would require a different password than the account password that would generate the same authentication code.
what about just adding one of those random letter combo generators at the log in screen? If that worked as both extra security, (if its always changing, keyloggers cannot record it right?) and an authentication. I.E. generating a letter picture as the authentication code. .....I feel like there's a logic step missing, but I guess thats why you folks get paid the monies, and I just enjoy the game.

Authenticators would be a fantastic option, for those who think security is all about common sense. Several friends of mine who played wow, are internet smart, extremely paranoid and still had accounts stolen, while I never did with the authenticator. FYI all friends scanned their computers with root kits scans, multiple virus detectors, malware scans, nothing came up, to this date, we have no clue how the account information was recorded, but IT was, of course the account taking only occurred after the accounts were closed, not during use, but still. You can use all the common sense you want, doesn't mean your 100% safe. Authenticators add an extra layer of security that makes it, that much harder to actually get into your account.
Yes, I know accounts with authenticators could still get compromised, guess what else, it meant you had a Trojan on your computer for it to happen.

Authenticators are not bullet proof
I'm sorry but if you think Authenticators prevent you from being hacked you're naive.
They will NOT help in the case of a 'man in the middle' attack.
