    Default Shielding Changes on PTS

    Hello all,

    With the latest update to the PTS (Public Test Server), we’ve released some changes to to how shielding works in RIFT. Rift’s current healing game largely revolves around layering multiple Absorb shields on tanks and raid members to negate incoming damage. This, in turn, demands encounter design which frequently deals more than 100% of players’ health in one shot in order to provide challenge in encounters.

    The extent to which survival is dependent on having stacked absorbs isn’t healthy for RIFT gameplay, and we’re working to make healing the player’s health bar matter as much as or more than simply layering absorbs on them. To this end, we’re testing a change which caps the total amount of absorb any given player can receive. We’re using 50% of max health as the starting point for our test, but this will be adjusted if it proves too restricting or not impactful enough.

    This means that for most players with 60k health, up to 30k can be added in shielding. Tanks, however, need more ability to receive shields – so increasing Dodge rating will increase the maximum amount of Absorb the character can stack. In turn, this allows us to tune down burst damage from boss encounters in PvE, while still allowing them to feel challenging. This change also opens the door for healing specs which focus on healing throughput rather than absorption to have a place in groups, while still keeping absorb specs valuable.

    Of course, with a change of this scope, we’ll tinker with the performance of souls which currently rely heavily on absorbs for their effectiveness. Our priority is to make sure they remain competitive with more traditional healing souls. We’re testing these changes on the PTS server right now, so round up some friends and test some Dungeons and Warfronts with this change, then post here on the PTS forums to let us know how they work for you.

    RIP purifier. Too bad they way RIFT is optimized currently, dodge is useless, while guard and block are essential for tanks.

    Maybe... just maybe that's exactly why they put the extra shielding cap on dodge but not block and guard? Just a crazy thought.

    An interesting change. Any details on exact value changes for existing bosses? We use one tank on Zilas, but if the Tank can only get something like 50-60% shielding (depending on their Dodge), and Zilas' damage isn't adjusted enough, I guess we'll need to go back to 2-tanking it.

    Don't see how this would "kill" puri. 50% shields is still going to be better than little or no shields. Sounds like this change is targeted at stacking multiple puris or phys for huge spike damage.

    btw someone needs to go turn the pts back on- its been down since they reset the live servers today.

    All current-tier boss damage will be lowered to fit this new paradigm. I'm not sure exactly how much, but we're working closely with the raid guys on it to ensure that we're not increasing the lethality of encounters with this change.

    Or the fact that primalist is about to come out... and it was hinted during stream that primalist healing revolved around "raw" healing and not absorption... You don't want to make a new product that doesn't work/sell well.

    edit: or they actually just want to make puri less dominating... tho I don't see how this will affect puri dominance since puri will remain to be the best tank healer (and flame of life value)... at most this will do is make other healing souls a bit more viable.

    Sounds terrible, a change without any thought (as I expect from Trion by now):

    What about tank shields? Currently every tank spec besides Pally has atleast a 50% shield meaning that this would overwrite all other shields, some of them are over 50% even...

    Dodge Buff? Yeah no thanks, tanking should not rely on dodge RNG.

    What about fights like Vladmal, Zilas, Izkinra? All these bosses truck tanks.


    Just nerfing shielding is going to mess **** up big time, don't do it before 4.0.

    How does this affect tanks self shields?

    Does Shield of the North Wind from Arbiter not grant 100% health shield anymore or does it bypass it?
    Are Arbiter shields also considered into the calculation of shielding or are they spared this treatment?

    I'm more concerned with tank self-shields then healers shields. Will this change also affect self-abilities ? For instance mage Shields ? If so, it would be a HEAVY nerf to tanks self-sufficiency (which is currently one of the most fun aspects of tanking in this game )

    Red Hawk said they will nerf encounter damage... you never know, they might overnerf them and now you can run solo warden and heal the entire raid while keeping the tanks up.

    Tanks' cooldown-based self shields will increase their Absorb cap for the duration of the self-shield. Any spammable self-shields will count towards the cap.
