Default Pronunciation of what everyone wants to get in to

    Ok, I'm curious from watching videos;

    Bee-ta

    or,

    Bay-ta?

Does this vary with nationality or is it just me that says Bee-ta?

Does it follow the trend for the pronunciation of tomato?

I don't know about everyone else, but I've always said Bay-ta... I'm from the USA, so perhaps you are correct.

EDIT: I mean, perhaps you are correct, it's like to-may-toh, to-mah-to.

Hmm I believe its the same as tomato and tomA[ei]to... Personaly I say Bay-ta, but a lot of my friends say Bee-ta, however all of us know what we are talking about, thus it does not matter how we say it. Plus ALL of my friends are of different nationalieties, and some speak with differen accents, thus we dont pay attention to "Proper" spelling. And we dont have any "Grammar Nazis" in the group.. ;)

    bey-tuh or, especially Brit., bee-

From dictionary.com. I use bey-tuh myself, and haven't ever heard anyone say it the other way (but as mentioned I live in the USA, still kinda surprised I haven't heard anyone I know from Australia say it the other way).

Hmm for some reason it kinda depends :P If you mean beta phase of testing I pronounce it as Bee-ta. If you ask me what the greek letter is its Bay-ta.

I rather be in Alpha tho :P which I both pronounce the same :P

Considering in the Greek, Epsilon (E) is pronounced like 'AY' in bay, or 'E' in bet, and that Iota (I) was pronounced 'EE' as in meet or see, I would have to say, Bay tah or Bet ah would be proper.

    BUT

Beta (B) could also be pronounced as 'V' in vote. So it could technically be:

    'Vay Tah' or 'Vet ah'

I always prefer they let me in the Alpha, as that seems to sort out any questions of pronunciation. "Al fah"

Heh, I agree with that kind of thinking. It's a better way to sort out this whole issue, let us in to start working on the game and leave the head scratching over pronunciation to the late comers.

    Ahh here we go: Beta

According to that wiki page it is phonetically pronounced Bay-ta in the US and Bee-ta in the UK.

It would be interesting to point out that I've looked up US and UK spellings of words such as center before and found I spell things in a way that is often assumed American. Perhaps I'm influenced by lots of websites and books written in American English. In the same way people are influenced by American pronunciation on TV and in films.

Does seem to be the Americans saying Bay-ta here...well except Elladar.

That's because you're saying it correctly. /nod Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think the way Americans do everything is right. For example, Brits are highly superior at spelling, theatre is much preferred to theater, colour is way better than color, etc. I'll always choose the Brit spelling if there's a choice.

Now, as for me, I say it "AL-fa". Because that's where I'll be playing while y'all will still be waiting and begging for "Bay-ta" to start.

What do you mean you lot want to be in alpha...

    ...I'm already there!

That's why I asked about beta.

I chose that one 'cause I couldn't get an alpha pronunciation joke to work. Alpha or what?

Different places got different accents, is it that hard? Ppl say it diffrently.

Luckily we're on a forum, where noone have to actually say it.

Anyone have a computer where it will read the words out loud? I think that will solve this issue. =p
