    Default Being unemployed sucks.

I've been out of work for 7 months now, and man is it getting real old. Getting a job has been more than a little difficult what with the horrible job market and my extremely specialized skill set. I am overqualified for most jobs, so I can't just "get a job" like some people seem to think. The department that laid me off has a rehire policy. Seems great at first, except what that seems to have resulted in is, "Yeah, she's good, but if we pick her up she'll leave as soon as they call."

I am way bored. My grandmother has me reorganizing her private library and cataloging it. That is cool enough, I suppose, but I became a librarian for the people, not the books. I volunteer at the local animal shelter, but I can only do that during open hours.

I don't have television. I have read all of my books. I am at an ebb currently with writing. I am tired of world of warcraft and have been for a while. League of Legends is stressful, and Spore is getting old. And, of course, Rift isn't out yet.

What the heck should I do for the next week while waiting for open beta?

Plan your schedule for next week. You should be busy starting Tuesday so you want to have a plan for menial stuff like showering (important), meals, drinks, shopping done, etc.
Tomorrow is Friday, catch a movie. The Eagle looks decent.
Prep your pc. Dust the interior with some canned air. Defrag. Make sure you have latest drivers, run a virus scan, etc.

    I'm out of ideas.

I'm going out of town for a day or two this weekend, kill a couple days there.
I'm really looking forward to Tuesday though!

I wish I'd take my own advice. I haven't tried this yet, but get a canvas, some paints, and see what happens. This might only be useful if you've never gone this route.

Sorry you're finding it tough in the job market. Librarians are cool (I used to work at a library).

If it's people you're looking for, perhaps a class on painting -- or something else interesting -- is on offer somewhere. Something creative (but not writing, if that's your main thing).

Meditate. Thich Nhat Hahn teaches us that it allows for maximum mental clarity and self realization.

Ruka I can't honestly recommend much unless I know whether you've got some cash in your pocket to burn or not.

Honestly, that makes a huge difference - at least for guys like me.

I'd love to offer cute suggestions like PAINT YOUR TOENAILS WITH YOUR IMAGINATION or CALL A FRIEND AND JUST SAY HEY but I won't, because that's ********. So yeah - if you've got a little cash to burn I've got suggestions.

If you don't, understandably, I don't have much to offer.

That really sucks. I lost my job right after the big boom, but was able to get a new job in a completely different field i studied for, which is not bad since i am still 23.

Maybe that would be a start? Find something that you can learn, but are not a pro at. They seem to either looking for execs, or people they can pay crap because of non qualification.
Fortunately after a year working here, i am almost back up to my previous salary at my old company since i learned things so quickly.

One more thing you can do is find jobs that are not local. Especially if you are in new york (like me). Finding jobs in different states could be better. When i was job hunting, i found more jobs in Alabama and Texas and Cali than i did where i was. It was just a ***** and a half to move out there with little savings and im not someone who cares for change of scenery nor am i much of a risk taker as to go to a different state for a job.

But a cheap hotel in a new state that has a job opening for you until you get your bearing may be an option if you are adventurous.

    @Ruka

I am in the same boat ... been out of work since last Aug. I'm in commercial construction and live in Las Vegas. That's like saying I love skydiving with no parachute. The umemployment in Vegas is at 15% ... For my trade it is at 95%. So we are all waiting untill the casinos start making a move again.

What I did early on to keep my time was to start a Blog. ... Mine is Covenant of Telara ... RIFT Lore. I work on it quite a bit. I have learned a ton doing it so much that I'm starting to feel like a Lore guru. My blog is getting about 600 - 800 hits a day. Not bad for a LORE inspired gaming blog. We all know how lore atracts so few players.

Anyhow ... I say try a blog ... just pick a subject, maybe books, etc and GO FOR IT !!!
    It's a lot of fun.
RiftRares ... A work in progress.
    Rogue on FaeBlight
    8/8 RR's ... 4/4 DH ... 4/4 GP ... 5/5 GsB ... 5/5 RoS ... 2/4 RotP ... 10/11 HK

You may want to PM the maker (Basiik) instead of bumping his thread.... would be my guess at reaching him faster.

Taking a class or anything else that costs money is out. One of the great things about MMOs is that they are incredibly cash efficient.

The blog idea, painting and meditation are all neat ideas that I hadn't thought about. And I really need to finish up my current project. I am at about 40,000 words with a target of around 95k with no excuse not to continue but (to be frank) depression and ennui. How emo of me. Waiting on feedback from my last project before I start contacting agents and collecting rejection slips.

I have thought about retraining and I will if I have no recourse. However, I would rather not. Not only do I have a Master's degree and 40k in student loans, but I really, really love being a public librarian. It is what I wanted to be as a kid and I made my dream. How many people can say that?

There are librarian jobs out there...in Canada. I have nothing against Canada, but I don't want to sell my house in this market, lol. Since my husband happily is gainfully employed moving is offthe table...for now. If things don't improve in CA we may have to consider it though.

ive been outta a job since november

the company i was with downsized and i was one of the ppl unfortunately that they cut. more unfortunate is the job situation in my area....

cant say i have ever been unemployed for as long as a 7month period, though i got a few months out for a serious wreck i was in one time. its fine for the first few weeks....but then you start running out things to do. then things start really getting boring after a while. so ya i know how ya gotta feel by 7 months out. just gotta get out and do stuff i suppose.

7 years of that song playing on repeat as I grinded my way through that game. Not once did I ever get sick of the music. They don't make games like they used to.
