    I agree 100% with the OP; skype is great for people who are too stupid to set up vent.

    Oh, and mumble's still better than vent.

    Edit: oh, and skype 5 sucks donkeyballs.

    Mumble wouldn't lie...

    Here, alternate question. How many people does skype's confrence call handle in one session?

    Can you seperate multiple confrence calls listen and participate in them all at once without spamming random gibberish?

    Can you make the guy that wheezes when he breaths...not pollute the channel?

    Default Skype is perfect for PUGs, small groups and people who do not want to pay for voip

    If you want vent/mumble/teamspeak for your PUGs you have to:

    1. Find a service provider
    2. Sign up for service
    3. Pay for the service
    4. Set up your server
    5. Manage your server

    With Skype it is 100% Free and you have to:

    1. Tell someone your screenname

    and have crystal clear communication with NO lag within seconds.

    The end-user doesn't have to do any of those things. Simply ask for servername/IP, port and password, join, select channel you want to move to and presto.

    I use skype on a daily basis for work. It doesn't support features like different rooms, PTT, it randomly tells me people on my contacts list are offline when they're not, delays messages (voice and chat) for minutes (no lag, yeah right), randomly uses different audio devices than the ones I set up, resets it's config to default, etc, etc, etc.

    Skype is a piece of ****, sorry.

    Or be like me and have your own locally hosted vent server and just have the info bound to a macro and shoot it to friends?

    I use Skype for a lot of personal communication. I use a Skype based VOIP home phone system. Compared to vent, it's a resource *****. It's extremely sensitive to ping rates and bandwidth issues. Try downloading a file or two, playing a game, and maintaining a skype call. The download speed gets killed, and often the Skype call gets dropped. That's on my 16 meg service at home. Skype likes to be the center of attention.

    What does vent do? It doesn't hurt my download speeds.
    It allows me to be a phantom in multiple channels.
    It allows me server admin rights over people
    It doesn't drop a call because I've got too much going on in the back ground.
    It's nothing fancy, but it just works.
    It has built in PTT functions

    Want to normalize everyone's volume (no more Special Effects volume settings:

    Go to Setup
    * Enable Direct Sound
    * Select the SFX Button
    * Select Compressor and click Add.
    * Under Compressor Properties use the following settings:
    Gain = Adjust for how loud you want people to be. (I use -1)
    Attack = 0.01
    Release = Around 500
    Threshold = Around -30
    Ratio = 100
    Pre delay = 4.0
    * Done!

    Now, i definitely prefer vent, but if I were running with a crew that really wanted to use Skype, I certainly could. I did for a brief time on War. It wasn't my favorite, but it worked, but as for me, I'm sticking with vent.
