i'm really wondering why they didn't implement a more sandbox approach, given the immense popularity of mods for the elder scrolls games.

I think during the development process, while swtor was also in development, they thought that swtor would be a massive hit with millions of subscribers, so they tailored their game around voiced quests etc. etc. so they could snatch some of "swtor's hypotehtical massive subs" instead of focusing on sandbox and community driven content.

i think TSW was developed with a similar mindset as well, but , unlike ESO, is actually an excellent game.

I can't stress enough how ESO is in no way and elder scrolls game.
    Could not agree more.

The whole game looks like it was made as Generic Hero Engine MMO. (Yes, even after SWTOR used this engine 2.5 years ago, with all it's flaws, Elder Scrolls decides to do the same..) Anyway, then a few splashes of paint to theme the thing remotely Elder Scrolls and tada, they will make millions in sales.

I actually thought Skyrim was one of the most over-rated games in a long time but the combat, questing, even story in ESO doesn't compare. It isn't even in the ballpark tbh.

As a launch buyer and subscriber to SWTOR, I wasn't very impressed. Yet somehow, ESO manages to be worse than that.

Rift really has nothing to worry about in terms of losing many of its player base, longterm, to ESO.

I was a Morrowind fan myself

Although, buying an Xbox 360 at launch with Oblivion and getting out of the sewers for the first time and seeing the (at the time) most amazing environment ever and in HD for the first time has been one of my fondest gaming memories ever.

I was never a console fan, PC. All the way. The only console games I played where resident evil, primevil, any crash game, GTA vice city, CoD, ES games and tomb raider oh and the dance mat for ps1. Almost forgot final fantasy. I had a gameboy for a bit but then rollercoaster tycoon came out and took all my time up. My brother had all the consoles till I forced him on to PC I just watched him most the time. Then he got in to WoW and forced me to level a hunter. I went in to a dungeon for the first time and tried to tank it was really funny watching the rage.

If a developer said that about their sub game before it was released I would be worried and just wait until f2p.

Rift doesn't really have to worry about any other game. Only the hard-core fans are left now, plus a few transient F2Pers hoping for something good and going away disappointed. Those hard-core players will probably stick with Rift, blind to the decline in quality.

lol, the next step for the rift community would be to get hyped for a miracle patch/addon.

I have pre-ordered ESO but don't think it will be anything more than something to do when I'm not playing rift. Especially considering the lack of raiding content.

That said when I put my PVP hat on it really does look like fun. This video just blows me away

While I am the first to admit the game is falling apart, there seems to be WAY WAY more new, f2p, casual whatever you want to call them, players than hardcore.

I'm not sure what game you are playing.
