    Default Offensive Names

Has anyone had problems with their name being offensive?

In many MMOs I've made clerics named Rabbi.

When I played DAOC, I got an email telling me that the name was a rule violation and I had to submit a new name.
I assume that someone reported me.

When I played WoW, I asked if anyone wanted to group, and someone said that he wouldn't group with someone that had my name.

I once grouped with someone who asked if I was anti-semitic. I told him that I wasn't. I'm Jewish.

Has anyone else had problems with offensive names?

I can see this thread going places.

If people find your name offensive, so be it. Although if you've had the same problem in other games, I don't know why you'd expect anything different here.

Your choice to choose your name. Other players choice whether they find it offensive.
Tbh I couldn't care less what your name was.

The naming policy says something about religious figures but it would be an extremely grey area, since many common names have roots in religious texts. Not that the policy is really enforced much, besides someone trying to call themselves captaincluster**** or something. Don't see how Rabbi could be deemed offensive.

Whilst I and many others would not find it offensive, you have to understand other people of other faiths are in the game too, none of which are throwing religion down your neck with their char names.

I'd leave religion out of the game... we already have enough fiction in game without adding the whole religion lot to it.

The problem is that anyone can find anything offensive, whether it's meant to be or not. You'll always get that one idiot who finds everything offensive and thinks it's his civic duty to report names that might be construed as inappropriate to avoid hurting someone's feelings somewhere.

I use lore appropriate names in the games I play. It doesn't make sense to me to do anything else. So I have yet to have a problem with anyone considering any of my character names offensive.

I had someone report me in DAOC for my paladin wearing all black armor...
    Said it ruined his immersion.

Rabbi just means teacher. Why would someone find that offensive?

I see no problem with that name. Once had a toon named Jesuscrits, but didn't keep long. Have even had a few disparaging remarks about penguins. Oy vey.

Never had any problems with any of my names however I can recall back in WoW someone reported my then partners name Daftbint as offensive, Also, same game, a pally in our guild called Pissedagain had to name change due to that been deemed offensive.

Ironically, pissed or any variation of that word was not at the time blocked by blizzards profanity filter despite been considered a vulgar/offensive word in the UK anyway. Typical blizzard double standards there I guess.
