Default What Makes a Gamer a "Good Gamer"?

I'm being serious here. In your opinion what makes a good MMORPG player a great gamer?

What talents or attributes do they have?
What do you look for in grouping up or guilding with other gamers?

Quick index and middle finger. As compared to a console player with quick thumbs...

    Humor - relative

Humility- very rare if at all non-existant

    flexibility - relative

patience - *looks at all the qq posts complaining about grind, class issues*

    mad skills - relative

All the ones that say "relative" means thats relative, relative to who you are grouped with/guilded with and based upon your perception.

Most of the good gamers imo are just a blast to play with, willing to help you with stuff that they have no concern with, can carry a conversation without resorting to childish behavior, and have an ear for listening. so few so few.....

No i am not a good gamer.

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward,
Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both,
For a wounded man shall say to his assailant "If I die you are forgiven...."

"If I live, I will kill YOU"
such is the rule of honour.

I would have to say the very best gamers all exhibit the following:

    - ability to rapidly adapt to changing situations
    - intelligence
    - understanding of game mechanics

You might find good players missing one of those attributes, but the very best have them in spades.
    Nope.

To me, those are the attributes a gamer possesses that make them great at playing the game.
    Add:

    - patience
    - respect

Those would be 5 qualities of highly effective gamers, the bare minimum for any great MMORPG gamer.

The first three make you a great raider/solo player, the second two make you a great gamer, a person worthy of the term.

I would have to say the only thing a good gamer needs in order to be a good is intelligence.

    Having intelligence allows:

    1. Ability to adapt to changes (raid environment, new patches, etc.)
    2. Ability to understand game mechanics within a short period of time (bosses, soul synergy, etc.)
    3. Ability to understand the phrase "1 is infinitely greater than 0" in it's full meaning.
    4. Ability to empathize.
    5. Ability to conduct oneself maturely in a situation where there is conflict.
    6. Ability to be efficient.
    7. Ability to understand balance.
    8. Ability to take the game seriously.***

***I must emphasize that this doesn't mean ability to play the game endlessly. Its meaning is more along the line of respect for other people who play the game. Someone who takes the game seriously is someone who truly cares about achieving a common goal in the most efficient and practical manner possible without hindering or bothering others around them. The most obvious example would be in a raiding environment where someone who takes the game seriously would be fully prepared with proper spec(s) and consumables instead of relying on others to carry them.

A good gamer is one who is known to be good or skilled and other people are the ones who say so about him/her.

A person who usually has to brag about themselves are rarely any good. It's kind of like in LoL... complainers and 1337 do0dz have a reported 13% higher loss rate than other players.

Thus, a good gamer is often skilled, humble, and considerate.

I tend to look for friendly, good sense of humor, and able to think intelligently about goals and purposes. Someone who forgets that the game is there to be fun will be no fun to play with, and no amount of technical merit will ever make up for that. I've yet to encounter someone who was too incompetent to be fun to play with; I've met lots of people who were too mean to be fun to play with.

... To be fair, I've met people who were indeed stunningly incompetent, but they were annoying enough that it didn't change anything.
You can play WoW in any MMO. You don't have to play WoW in RIFT. Oh, and no, RIFT is not a WoW clone. Not having fun any more? Learn to play, noob! I don't speak for Riftui, but I moderate stuff there. Just came back? Welcome back! Here's what's changed. (Updated for 2.5!)
