Default Shock value statements and its effects

So we've all seen them, every guild has one if not a group of people. Some completely ignore them, others say "they just say things to get a reaction out of you, so don't take it personal". And the regular reaction out of everyone is to ignore them or pretend that they are not offended.

So question is when someone goes off on these people, when they strike a nerve, when someone starts trolling the troll(s) .... why does the original troll get defensive and start crying?

If they did it to get a reaction why is it the most obvious reaction would be a remote possibility to them? You wanted to piss someone off, so why are you complaining when you finally do?

When drama ensues, why does guild management act utterly shocked? Its like sticking 2 really pissed of snakes in the same tank, and then being dumbfounded when one kills the other. Drama ensues and people are either kicked or they leave which utterly results in diminished raid numbers.

To Troll or not to Troll. That is, indeed, the question.

Ohh my beloved 50 chat <3

My brand of Trolling isn't even trolling by any current definition, but I have many fans.

    That said,
Guild Trolling is rude. Period. And anyone doing it should just be booted. When I was GL various times, "back in the day", that's what I would do. Trolls don't fit into the type of guilds I run.

    But 50 Chat... ahhh... <3

partially correct, i was feeling nostalgic and going through various people that i know in rift, then started contemplating the various guilds said people were/are in. Most leave or get kicked, and these people are dedicated raiders logging in 3-4 a night wiping over and over again. and despite that, said guild gets torn apart due to drama, most of the time because of the scenario i gave.

I recall a particular discussion i had with a guildie who said "even back in wow when we get someone new who causes issues and is rude to others, we just ignore him. because after awhile they would stop"

while this strategy works on 5 year olds, most likely we're dealing with someone who is 5 for the past 35 years of their lives...

I'd def agree with that, it keeps guild turmoil down, filters out the riff raff/undesirables. Some guilds though have a hard time executing this concept. 50 chat... i could care less, if its really bad just go to combat log or other tabs you have setup.

Yeah, I've seen a few people booted for stuff like that.

I think the crying is just part of the attempt to Get Responses.
You can play WoW in any MMO. You don't have to play WoW in RIFT. Oh, and no, RIFT is not a WoW clone. Not having fun any more? Learn to play, noob! I don't speak for Riftui, but I moderate stuff there. Got ideas for improving the RIFT community? Feel free to PM me. Just came back? Welcome back! Here's what's changed. (NOTE NEWer URL)

It's really getting harder to find a 'drama free guild'. And that is the reason, my guild of 3, suits me just fine.

Kick them. Screw the raid numbers if people can't act like normal human beings then i don't even want to see their names in the roster.

Even if that means that the raid roster won't be full for the next raid and we have to backstep a boss or two.
I'd rather have the guild intact 2 years down the line than killing Xyxoyuox dragon of doom 1 week earlier

One could write books, teach courses, get degrees, offer professional therapy, go on talk shows, host talk shows..... all about topics like this.

Not going to talk about the pyschological aspect of this. Nor mention the decay of the social structure in the last 40 years (that's the privilege of every "older" generation since time began and I'm not quite 60 yet ). Won't even mention manners and lack of consequences as the result of the anonymous nature of the internet.

Those above have all talked about ad nauseum across multiple MMOs. And topics like this still come up.

I will just say: it depends entirely on the value of the guild itself, and the integrity / fear level of the guild leader. Period.

In this game alone, I have seen a perfect example of this. I have witnessed 2 guilds who have had guild drama play out in public on our shard. And who have foisted their immature guild members on the rest of the shard without care, concern for reputation or impact on the community at large. To the point that their members were put on shard-wide ignore and rapidly became a joke. Both the players and the guilds.

If the guild overall values reward (see: phat loot and/or "status") above other things, and the guild leader fears losing a "skilled" (please note the quotes) player that apparently "offers something", then chances are, they will tolerate and accept incredbily immature behavior from that particular member. This is often magnified when the immature member is related to the guild leader in real life (friend, relative).

This scenario has also has been talked about ad nauseum across multiple MMOs. And still continues.

Welcome to humanity and human motivators.

I don't mean to sound jaded, just experienced.

Yes, it's annoying. Both in and out of a guild and/or guild alliance (see: other games.) And you have my absolute empathy if it's happening in a guild you belong to.

-Happily in a small guild of 20+years-real-life friends where we value each other more than gameplay.
What came out of this (WoW) is a subculture of raiders -- no one who had raided in previous games -- boors who can't even spell noblesse oblige, much less explain what it means.

I want the boors off my server. The raiders I'm fine with. It's the boors I want gone.

^belongs to an entire guild that trolls the entire shard! lol. Good to see your still psychologically wounded from our last discussion....

and the sad thing is, you still have no idea who i am, which makes me even more satisfied...

I could be in your very own guild, and you would not know it.

Generational psychology aside, the anonymity of the internet plays a large factor. And you don't sound jaded at all, its a perfectly normal reaction to the environment we all are in. Take the above poster for example, making a point to post after several weeks after an altercation. Take the dignified route and leave it alone, obviously not. But that's the way people carry themselves when there is little to no accountability to their actions.

This does not appear to be the case; most trolls will troll under their own names just as much, and most people behave well regardless of whether you know their names.

A lot of it isn't so much generational as age/maturity; there's a kind of mindset that leads to disruption for its own sake, and people like that tend to be highly visible in MMOs simply because there's nothing to make them less visible.

    Ahem.

    Trolling is an art.
Most people who do it are talentless amaeturs.
The trolling, and I use this word loosely here, that they attempt to do is low grade and lacks any class or humor.
Usually, it is just some rude statments or a controversial subject that is brough up.
These "trolls" think they are doing a good job, where they usually just outright offend someone, or start a talk about a subject without anyone actually getting trolled.

Eventually, no matter what, you need to take it easy.
If they are fail trolls, then they are just trying to offend you, and you should not pay any attention to that.
If they are good trolls, they are just joking with you anyway, so join in with the laughs.

Guild trolling or drama however is unacceptable and should end with nothing else than a gkick.
