Default Can someone recommend some good Anime?

LOL I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND MY SINCEREST APOLOGIES FOR POSTING THIS IN GENERAL. IT HAPPENED BY MISTAKE. IT WAS 1AM AND RIGHT BEFORE BED FOR ME. I SUBMITTED AND TURNED OF MY COMP. NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. PROMISE.
I've been solo-hunting good anime, and haven't been able to find any recently. I won't say I've seen a lot, but I'm into a certain kind. I'll list what I've enjoyed so far. btw, I use the term anime loosely:

    Ninja Scroll
    Akira
    Ninja Scroll series
    Princess Mononoke
    Appleseed
    Basilisk
    Karas
    Samurai Champloo
    Afro Samurai
    Battle Angel
    Avatar The last Airbender
    Ghost in The Shell
Ghost in The Shell Standalone Complex

A little eclectic, but as you can see if you know these titles, there's usually hand-to-hand combat/martial arts involved, mystical powers and a pretty good plot. I haven't found a single series/movie that involves mechs as a central focus, but am not opposed to cyborgs/sci-fi type stuff, as long as the story is good(i know, subjective, right?) I also tend to like stuff with more mature themes, not too light-hearted or comical.

    Thanks in advance!

    Anyone have any good recommendations?

I highly recommend the Samurai X OVA's. They detail the journey of Kenshin, the Batto-sai, from the Rouroni Kenshin series. Except these OVA's show his childhood, his ascension to power, and the events that not only led to his vow to never take another life but the literal source of his facial scars.

I also recommend FLCL (though the manga is better than the anime) and Beck, which is the story of a young boy who learns to play guitar, joins a band, and quits school to tour the world. It's much more relatable than it sounds ;)

Now and Then, Here and There

Fits your desire for more mature themes, not light-hearted, and definitely not comical. It's sort of dark, depressing, and well.. Unique.

Plot Summary: Shu is a typical Japanese boy, but has an unbeatable, optimistic and determined attitude. However, when he sees a mysterious girl with strange eyes named Lala-Ru up on a smokestack, he is soon pulled into a strange desert world. Shu soon discovers the true terrors of war, which includes genocide, brutal torture, hunger, thirst, and child explotation. Now Shu is trying to save Lala-Ru, as well as his hard earned, and often relunctant, new friends from the insane dictator, Hamdo. Whether Shu can possibly accomplish saving those he cares about while still holding up to his values remains to be seen.

Are a few of the currently airing action oriented animes.

Most revolve around some form of romantic comedy but I believe they are all action fantasy magic martial arts type things.
The ones with * next to the name I believe you would find the most fitting to your mature theme, but Togainu no Chi is a BL anime so may want to skip over that if you arn't in that.

You're not a man until you've seen Gurren Lagann.

    Also, Lucky Star is epic-awesome.

Just because it's pornographic doesn't mean it's not anime.
