    Default Bacon

For the BACON CONNOISSEURS out there....

I have spent some time in England recently and have found that what they call bacon is essentially ham, with one small fatty strip on the outside. It is nothing at all like the smoked and thickly marbled bacon we enjoy in America.

What do you make of this?

Are there yet other countries calling non bacon pork products bacon?
    Thanks for the haircuts.

They have "normal" bacon as well. "Canadian Bacon" exists in other countries as well.

The movie Canadian Bacon is the only Moore film I've ever watched or will ever watch. I enjoyed it.

At the Calgary Stampede this year, I had a doughnut hamburger with bacon and cheddar. Well that's not entirely true, I had one bite and gave the rest to my BF. What is a doughnut hamburger? Someone might ask. Well it's exactly what it sounds like. It's a hamburger with a powdered doughnut instead of a bun. A heart attack hiding in wax paper.

Last time I was in Italy, I got a pizza with "Tignale Bacon" (the local town was Tignale). It has to be one of the worst things I have ever eaten in my life. I do love bacon, thus why I ordered it, but it was basically paper thin pig fat...and although that sounds good, trust me, it's no where near it.

Moral of the story, not all bacon is good.

I was in Mexico a few years ago, and to make a long story short, what they call "bacon" might not even come from a pig...

Well, I never thought that Canadian bacon bears much resemblance to bacon. It tastes a lot like ham... which I never liked.

This thread is kinda dodgy, nestling alongside '700-lb woman'. o.O

And eye-opening. I didn't realise US bacon was essentially pork belly. Here is Oz we do 'Short cut bacon', middle/rib rashers, but mostly rib rashers. We do back bacon less frequently, which (and I didn't realise this either) is the UK cut of choice.

See the middle for Chocolate covered Bacon. lol!

I wonder what ppl from faith traditions that require them to forego bacon think of threads like this (Tempted, revolted or already partaking anonymously while scoffing in secret from their faith community and spiritual leaders, lmao). A friend who grew up in Egypt mentioned that his friends whose disciplines required dietary restrictions, would point to the ham in the deli and ask for 'Some of that Mortadella'. (Which at the time was made from horse flesh)

It sounds to me that you bought your bacon from the local supermarket, which tbh is to salty and over ladened with water and what you mentioned above as"small fatty strip on the outside".
Next time you are in england might i suggest you go to a local farm and buy from them, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you get.

I buy on the regular from a local butcher, sourced from a local farm.
And I never said it wasn't delicious! Just not....what I have always thought of as bacon.
    Thanks for the haircuts.
