Post Poetry & Creative Writing Thread!

No doubt there is a lot of talent in this crowd. I've seen some great art since I've been here, but no poetry or creative writing threads yet. (not that I found with Advanced Search anyway) If you enjoy reading and writing poetry, jump in I'll kick it off with one of mine.

    The Butterfly

Oh butterfly swimming in autumn breeze
Have you ever fallen to your knees?
laid down your wings to bide your time,
for that which we find so sublime?

A childish grin, devoid of pride,
was all my fluttering friend replied.
    Burdened not by daily wages,
    fearful not of scripture pages

“Wait!,” I cried, “this cannot be!”
“Why fear you not what you can’t see?”
    Then something simple, yet profound
Brought my own feet to the ground

The whispers carried by the wind
have no faith to earn or spend.
On an autumn day, it happened to be
that a butterfly had set me free.

The problem with posting poetry here is that if you do, you may not submit it to any publication whose primary form of readership is online- they do not generally take 'previously published' material.

That said, I'm sure most people are not looking to get their stuff published anywhere else, so I hope you get a lot of replies, I'm all for the support of creative writing. I could post a short story here, I suppose, but it would take up a lot of room and I might feel a little selfish if I did.

Happy to read others favorite poems though, as well!

    That's actually not true.

You're right! I had not noticed that the submission managers for my favorite places had changed their wording, which now specifically includes "...message boards or online blogs..."

Thanks for making me check it, it makes things a lot less tense in the online publishing world. Gotta go check others!

    No poetry?
    How dare you.
Outdated, I know. Deal with it.
It is an ironic habit of human beings to run faster when we have lost our way.

Hmmm, well this is indeed odd. That was very nice, good stuff!

    "Butterfly"
    Silken womb concealed within
duality of life shall soon begin
    Spawn from anothers self sacrifice
bestowed unto essence not once but twice
Break free from your shroud and kiss the day
lone butterfly shall find its way
Fly to the sun upon gossamer wings
on the whisper of the wind sail as it sings
Flight of the butterfly majestic and free
seek your new home across the sea
A yearly sojourn thy circle complete
waiting for spring till agin we may meet.

Many years ago this was my 1st poem to be published.
I usualy keep this sort of thing under wraps (shy) but I could not resist seeing your post and the theme of your poem.

If anyone wants to submit anything they think might be good enough for publication, I edit for: http://www.pifmagazine.com/. We would love to read your work! One caveat, though, while we might publish something along the lines of magic realism, we don't do heavy sci fi/fantasy.

I did publish this, however: http://www.pifmagazine.com/2010/12/treacherous/

It is about as far in that direction we would go...

A long-time friend of my family, Bruce Taylor, is a SFWA Magic Realism author with a number of books out over the past decades. It's not really my thing in general, but I have enjoyed reading his work.

The butterfly was one I wrote back in fall 2008, and was originally featured on RichardDawkins.net

Here's one I wrote this evening just for you

    Time Flys

Wet the feathered nares ye mighty winged creatures flay
Another rotting carcass helps your senses lead the way
What waits for me post mortem
    is what was there before
Nothing, with no soul left to endure

If we did not exist before the moment we were spawned,
Then why bother waking up the faithful as they yawn?
Life is just a journey, which hears no starting gun
So why not lead the way with laughter,
    taking every step for fun.

Each year the wings beat louder, oh how patiently they wait,
while we squander precious moments on jealousy and hate.
Your day will come, along with mine, and everyone around
When someone has to drop our rotting carcasses in the ground

    Listen to my words,
don't try to read between the lines,
    but don’t waste another moment
for the birds will bide their time.

    - Hool
