Just got a rare minion adventure and I was about to send my minion but then I got the notification 'Would you like to purchase this adventure'. So that means whenever a rare adventure pops up I have to purchase it with real money?

If you want to run the ones marked as those, yes. Have to keep in mind that they will obey the normal rules of minion adventures, so a bad match/result will yield grey rewards. Spending credits on these is no guarantee for a good outcome.
