    Default Trion-sanctioned Rift wiki...

Why don't we have an official comprehensive wiki like the communities of Eve Online and GW2 do?

    http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Main_Page
    http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page

It seems like a no-brainer way to hook new players in to the game mechanics and lore, but there are MMO's such as Rift who don't do it!

While lore isn't exactly the strong suit of Rift, it would be nice to know what the hell is going on. What exactly was this "ward" thing, who is Regulos, etc.

Instead of a decent well-run official wiki, I'm stuck with crap like Zam, Magelo, Telarapedia , etc.

I suspect the the whole "mystique of letting players find things out on their own" deal. Yeah, it'd be nice to have more official stuff straight from the horse's mouth, ideally without mistakes, but that means more manpower. These other sites are basically doing such work for them for free.

The community of these MMOs make the Wiki pages. If more people from the Rift Community worked on the Wiki page we have the better it would be.

Is the Wiki for Rift, few people update it so that is why it does not have the information people are looking for.

So really it's just that as a community we suck.

I'd love to see it being focused on one site, run by Trion - but with the same possibility for contribution as we have with other sites. Saves me from having to use three search databases in hopes of getting some details on one thing (not to mention that they can be slow about updating). I'd see it as a good service for the players for trion to start having something like this.

Also, the lore is pretty strong in Rift as it is, with the in-game books it's really one of the best ways I've seen to deliver lore to players. One could perhaps argue that some books are a bit more rare than what's good, due to their artifact sets, but it's pretty good over-all.
The lore does of course have some "But why, how?" open ends, though with the Lore Q/A initiatives (which so far has been posted on fan-sites.. I'd love to see them reposted on a wiki, because fansites do not last forever)

It's not that I have something against fansites, they're doing a great job at what they're doing, but I've seen fansites go down or go in a hiatus, which left a gaping hole in the community because there still was a need for them to be there. I think if Trion could "take over" some areas and tie them more in with the official website, there'd be more community contributions (they could also tie in titles with this.. "The walking wiki" etc, to reward people for making legit contributions) and it'd overall reflect positively on Rift.

Though there is one thing that could put it all to a screeching halt, and that is manpower (and with that, money) - It'll cost to develop and maintain areas such as these.

I contribute from time to time to places like Zam, and on the whole it's pretty solid, but it would be nice to have a more specific go-to site for all of us to rally around.
There is no such thing as "free to play" in the MMO world. If nobody was paying, the game would shut down, and you wouldn't be playing. Piggybacking and getting a free/cheap ride on people who do pay doesn't make a game "free to play", it just means someone else is paying for it.

Having an "official" Rift wiki where we could submit content would be a great step forward for the game and the community.
