I think you're in the wrong game if you want to buy gear with real-life money.
I hear Diablo III is coming out. Just wait a month and then buy all the epic gear you want with real-life money.
(I'm going to really enjoy grouping with people who outgear me but have no idea what they are doing).

I found a guild that was very helpful. Taught me stuff i didn't know. Some stuff a 50 should know but didn't. I'm still low on money but I don't really need to buy that much stuff. I learned how to buy stuff with other things in-game, like plaques and marks. I now have mostly purple items, 3 items are raid gear. And working on getting marks to buy even more gear.
It was all about finding the right people to help you.
Pssst.... buddy, over here!. No, don't turn around, we don't want anybody to notice us.
I'm gonna cut you in on a secret! There's this thing in game called crafting, you can make some really good gear with it. Enough to get you started with PuGs.
Or better yet, since you seem to be an upstanding, social kinda of guy, you can join a guild and they might be inclined to help you run some instances, if you treat 'em right, yanno what I mean?
Ok, the heat is on, gotta skiddadle, just talk to a crafting trainer and tell 'em Peri sent you!
What came out of this (WoW) is a subculture of raiders -- no one who had raided in previous games -- boors who can't even spell noblesse oblige, much less explain what it means.
I want the boors off my server. The raiders I'm fine with. It's the boors I want gone.
I have decent armor from doing chronicles solo. Which were easy for me.
However I find plat hard to get. Im not concerned with the special currencies at all. But most of the items I find are bind on equip, or soul bound, so I can't sell em.
I have been level 50 for a while now, and well Im still riding a 60% movement mount because the mount prices are even outragious. Or so I find.
Im certainly not a troll, and I can somewhat understand how the OP feels, however I am 100% againt a "pay for plat" format. I am however frustrated as well.
Keep doing the chronicles, every day. You can make quite a bit of plat, just from selling the junk to a vendor. If you're lucky you'll get a mount to drop. (there's one in HK and ROS)
If you have not been caught by the fishing/cooking (whatever it's called) bug yet... CATCH IT. I am currently making, when I feel like fishing, around 30 plat a day from that. I'm pretty sure the coin, will fall out of that soon, so do it NOW!
If you don't craft, start a craft. My apoth brings in around 40 plat a day, again, when I feel like making stuff to sell.
If you're not yet doing Ember, once you start there, you'll have plat coming out your ears. The daily quests reward.. I can't remember... but it adds up quickly.
If you're not interested in collecting artifacts yourself, collect and sell them. Get the Omen Sight ability (or whatever it's called Defiant side) if you don't have it. It's available from the planar guy.
If you're on Greybriar, let me know.
Get groups of people together to craft rift raids. I can make up to 200p from my guilds own crift raids. Sell minor catalysts and eternal planar dusts and watch the money roll in. I don't even sell the mats cause I give them to my my guild. On faeblight I seem to do fine getting 5p (on auction, usually do 4-4.5 if in chat) for minor cats, and 1.5p on eternals
Wow a bunch of posts got deleted. Strange...
There are not Powers above the Earth, on the Earth or beneath the Earth that can separate us from His love.
If a lot of posts were deleted its because some people are just rude. One person has an opinion and everyone has to be rude. You all that were must come from my old guild. They only cared about themselves and making themselves rich ingame, instead of helping others. Thanks you all the children who has to be nasty about this.
When I hit 50, I was quite lost for a bit, and agree that finding these vendors are not really that obvious.
Maybe Trion can send an ingame mail (sort of like the baseline chronicle or water saga start mail), that says something along the lines of "you might want to visit X to see some items we feel will help the ascended..."
