Unhappy Prancing Turtle... the last goodbye

    So.
This has been coming for a few months now, and for those that donít want to read the essay that will likely ensue as I put this together, the TLDR is that itís time for PrancingTurtle to go.

Now, for anyone that wants some context..

In late 2019, I posted about the fact that things needed to change in terms of where PT was hosted, and that would open up another kettle of fish in the fact that it needed a heck of a revamp as far as the tech supporting the site went. Rather than me rewrite all of that, here's the original post if you want to have a squiz.

Following that post and some of the responses that came back, on top of an amazingly generous donation towards some of the running costs, I decided that Iíd keep it going and throw myself back into it. Thatís exactly what I did, too. I had secretly hoped that thereíd be someone (or anyone) giving me a bit of help with some of it, but that opportunity didnít present itself. As a lot of you could imagine, asking for people skilled in these areas to donate time (for free) to something thatís not actively being supported and for a relatively small player base, isnít likely to garner much attention. But whatever, I jumped back into it because I wanted to.

I modified a lot of the database schema that was bugging me, implemented a bunch of new things there and following that, threw an absolute crap ton of time at making the extract/parse/save-to-db part of the process serverless. I learnt a lot throughout the process, got that all working and tested it repeatedly with around 10gb worth of logs. This are looking good at this point, which is Feb to early March-ish.

Then we get to the point where I needed to rework a large portion of the backend of the site, that is the layer(s) between the actual pages themselves and the database. Some of it was easy to figure out, some didnít need to change much, and other parts were more difficultÖ and that brings us right into the middle of the covid-19 pandemic and all of the crap that has come along with that.

Suffice to say that the huge changes occurring everywhere, particularly those areas that affected my work, movements and whatever else, have made it incredibly difficult to give enough time to this project on top of struggling for motivation. I know Iím not the only one, but it can be difficult for those of us content creators (in a sense, though you guys do the creating with the logging, I just made the framework around it) to admit when motivation is low because so many of you depend on what we do in a myriad of ways.

It was hard to post what I did back in late 2019, and Iíve held it together for longer than I thought I was going to be able to, but I canít maintain the cost of hosting the site and its database, on top of the work that it really needs if itís going to stay up and functional. So, itís with a great deal of sadness that it must be shut down, and realistically I need to do that within the next week or two.

Again, I am eternally grateful to those staff, whether they be current or past, that have donated their time in an effort to help PT out in different ways. Iím pretty sure that most, if not all of the time they gave in my direction was outside of hours and completely of their own accord.
Iím grateful to everyone thatís used the site over the last 6 years (or however long itís been), given me feedback, or even just those that have mentioned that it was useful in some capacity.
Last but not least, to those of you that have thrown dollars in my direction, I appreciate every single one of you & have tried my hardest to keep this going in the right direction Ė I just canít fund it myself for any longer, but youíve helped it last a lot longer than it otherwise would have.

    Much love,
    Hewi.

Hewi, sad to hear it, glad you were able to learn some things in changing the code etc, would you consider open sourcing the current codebase? It'd be a good thing regardless of it's current state.

Sad to hear the news, but I understand the reasoning behind it.

I sent you a friend request on Discord.

    Absolutely.
It's actually been on github for ages - the only thing not open source so to speak is the connection to the database, but the db schema itself and code in all its terrible need-to-be-fixed glory is here

What's not up there is the serverless Azure functions that I was working on, but given that they were part of a different db schema and not technically published to a working state, I haven't included them.

Thank you so much for all the time and care given!

Rip turtle. Feels like the end of an era.

It surely was a burden and letting go was ineviteable.
All the best for you and your future projects! <3

Without Prancing Turtle unfortunately also Riftstats has to close its doors. Was a nice time, but everything has to end sometime.

Default To Play Or Not To Play

    That is the question:

Whether tis' Nobler in the mind to suffer
No content, same raid, same specs,
Or to see through till the end of it,
And in doing so, cloture to that part of life?
To let go of all the hours spent,
To finally let the game rest in peace,
An end to all the sweat and effort
To finally rest and do something else-
'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished!
To let go, to sleep- To sleep, perchance to dream:
aye, there's the rub, for in that sleep of new content,
    what dreams may come,
when we have shuffled off this weekly mundane coil,
is something that keeps me latched.
What keeps me logging on every week,
despite the calamities of drought of so long:
To bear Gamigo's triteness, all the content creators,
Who worked hard in making these last years be,
Who demonstrate what love of this game is like,
When I could settle all the hours spent
using nothing more than the uninstall button?
Who will take their place? To keep the lights on
Not on the ceilings, but in the player's eyes
If they weren't frightened to let go-
To that undiscovered country, that is not RIFT,
To which no one returns, how do they do it?
Where do they do it? I prefer the little dopamine here,
Than to grind endlessly for hours to find it there.
Thus, the fear of quitting makes me coward,
And my willingness to uninstall is made weak
And lose the name of action. Soft you now,
The fair RIFT? The game that I played most
Be all my hours played remember'd
I am a bad... not your any type of bad... I'm the baddest of the bad. I am...

    Default Thank you

Thank you for all your hard work with Prancing Turtle. It has been a tremendous tool for many years. You did indeed keep it going longer than anyone else could have- and we holdouts are grateful. Be well my friend. And thanks for all the fish.

Thanks for all the effort Hewi. I got a lot of info out of the site during my raiding days. It bemused me to be number 2 on Commander for some time with the 'quirky' NB/Sab @ 2M DPS , only to be edged out by Nixia by the smallest of margins. Good times.

Maybe we'll see you in another game some day. AoC can't come quick enough. No add-ons allowed there so no threat of a parse web site needed

    Default ----------------- So sad ....

PT was the most useful tool to compare my own damage output with the bests of the bests.

If my damage-distribution was different from PT i knew i have to change my macros.

It was so helpful and interesting.

Kind regards from an former Rift-Player ...(pre-gamigo)

And most important: Thx for your work.
