Yeah, sad as it will make me.... I'm probably going to stop playing entirely. It's a fun game - and I've spent a LOT of money on it for a year and a half or so. I only buy patron with credits, a month at a time, so....

Later this month, it's going to be "bye y'all". I've enjoyed knowing most of you, but this kind of "in your face" crap is going to send me off to SPMR games again. Pillars of Eternity is fun, and I still love Oblivion and Skyrim.

It was apparent this was coming and Trion would not accept the feedback we provided. We all know that. But when I first logged on and had this Obnoxiously Humongous Eyesore "in my face" on my 42 inch monitor, I actually pushed back my PC chair from the monitor. I was beside my self. This "message and intent" Trion is sending is:
"GIVE ME YOUR MONEY BEFORE YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT GETTING IN GAME - NOW!!!".

I love Rift as many of us do, but this is plain and outright insulting, greed stricken and simply not cool. Is this the message and reputation you want, Trion? Come on Trion. You have been great ever since the FTP model (aside from the lock-boxes).

This will definitely have a huge impact on supposed "expectations" from Trion to it's customers for any newcomer and the returning players in a big way. Just look at what it's doing currently to your loyal paying customers at this point. It's not sitting well or looking too good, my Trion friends.

I look around in game and see SO many; purchase only mounts, mounts from paid lock boxes, pay only patron halos, pay only wardrobes, pay only roles, pay only classes, pay only dyes and the list goes on and on... So yeah; "we are and have been supporting you". If it's not enough and your taking a loss, shut down the game and have fun focusing on your new game without the money/resources from Rift.

You are sending a bad message here. I do not want Rift to go under, but I for one, am not here to support you're new game, I am not here to support any other Trion game. I am here to support Rift and only Rift.

If you do by chance have enough resources, stop the pain, silliness and demeaning tactics your marketing team came up with and listen to your loyal customers (before they are not "loyal" anymore). Possibly re-think how Trion is spending the money for resources for all of the Trion games and come up with something that works for your existing customers as well as your new endeavors. It is apparent something is not working for you and things need to be balanced business-wise. Both you and the Rift community needs a win-win model. Please at the very least think about it. At the most, bring it up at a board meeting and start to make a change for the better... for everyone including yourselves.

    I agree with your assessment.

I have been having 2nd thoughts about staying with Rift ever since the introduction of the Planar Crafting and the new crafting rift ridiculous drop rates, etc,. that I am seriously considering my time as a Rift player may be reaching an end.

I have hesitated to purchase much at this point. I refuse to purchase for credits anything I need for crafting if I can't use in-game currencies. And don't get me started on the Rex costs either.

I also am not in a hurry to pick up the new soul packs. Sorry, but I already have healer and dps characters, so I can't see any point in adding another of either since mine work just fine.

But now with all the so called credit only and now the "welcome window" pop up all hollering for money, you are pushing me to reconsider my membership in Rift as a player. I play other games too and right now Rift is pushing its limits with all these changes.

I don't find all the changes to be positive to the game I loved when it first launched. I love the game, I just don't like the direction the "money purchases" are going.

I am in 110% agreement with the complaints voiced so far. I have been playing Rift since launch, off and on. (Don't let my post count fool you; until recently I had no reason to be here, and trolls make my head hurt.) I was off for a good part of last year but around November I started hankering for my dimensions. So I came back. What I have seen is absolutely revolting from the view of a paying customer. This welcome screen thing may well be the breaking point for me--no matter what some underpaid purple says.

Unfortunately, I passed my business classes and see all of this for what it is; Rift has become Trion's "cash cow." It has become a mature game and has a good number of what the casinos like to call whales; those willing to spend a significantly higher amount on microtransactions than the average bear. These people are invested in their characters, guilds, dimensions, what have you, and tend not to pay much attention to increases in the amount of money they are actually spending.

Looking at just what has happened since November, I can clearly see that Trion is no longer investing any more than absolutely necessary to keep those whales spending money. They also want to keep the group of people who game-hop, pay money (as much as possible), see they don't like it, and leave. Their expansions are bug-riddled, their weekly updates require at least one hotfix, their customer service is non-existent, and the pay-only and lock-box-only items are rapidly climbing.

Trion knows that there are some who will continue buying credits for those lock-boxes no matter how unlikely it is they will get something of use. They know some people are completionists and 'must' have the newest minion, companion, horse, etc. Their focus is now how to milk as much as they can from the game before even the whales start screaming. Honestly, I hear them screaming now.

I also see that there is some method to the buy-only increases. It appears that they are testing to see how much they can get for a specific type of item (mounts, dimension items, minions, pets etc) and I would assume this is so they can set prices in their other games from the get-go, &/or how quickly they can raise prices before anyone notices.

I don't really blame the poor guys/gals who have to post absolute lies and try to pacify people who aren't going to be around to pacify much longer. They have to eat too. They have to realize, however, that not everyone who plays this game or reads the boards is a drooling high-school drop-out. Quite a few are very educated and see through the smoke-and-mirrors pony show (I'm sure quite a few high-school drop-outs do too--very smart, some of them, makes me want to cry when I write the check for my student loans) Humor injected because this whole situation is laughable.

No, you can't haz my stuff. It's all soulbound or account bound.

TL/DR; Trion has put Rift out to pasture as a milk cow, and the "buy buy buy" will only get worse until they pull the plug and move on to newer projects. Get used to things like the lovely 'welcome-buy stuff' message because it's only going to get worse.

Rift used to be classy, store window pop-ups are not classy. They're a characteristic feature of a mediocre f2p mmo.

Bump for justice. That pop-up is amazingly annoying. I keep trying to convince myself the game is worth playing, but this may just be the nail in the coffin.

I have been paying for a subscription. As a paying customer, I don't want to log into that nonsense every time I swap characters. Once a day, maybe. And even then I'm dubious.

I seriously do appreciate all of the feedback. We do hear you when you say that you're unhappy with the current implementation of the Welcome Window.

For us the Welcome Window is one of the few guaranteed ways we have of communicating important things with everyone in Telara. It's an effective tool for both communication and promotion. The RIFT team has never been opposed to trying out new things, both in the game itself and on the business side to help make sure we can always keep quality game content flowing.

In our ideal world we'd only ever have to focus on the act of game creation too, but in the world that we live in we also have to keep conscious of the business side of what we do. In this world, promotions are, hands down, the biggest reason that we've been able to keep the game as full of huge new updates as often as we do. We have every intention of keeping that up and experiments like this are one way to help make sure that keeps happening.

Some of you aren't fond at all of this window in its current state -- We get that. Just because we don't react to your feedback the way you want, doesn't mean we're not listening or that your opinions aren't critically important to us. Over time, we plan to evolve this window to have more relevant game information in a way that's useful to everyone. While we aren't going to ask 100% of you to be in love with it as is, we'll respectfully hope that you understand that keeping a full, large team on RIFT as we do, does involve experiments like this, as you quickly skip past it.

Based on feedback from PTS, we had already changed the window to only launch once every 20 hours, which we absolutely agree is a entirely reasonable improvement. Unfortunately there was a bug that caused the window to show up every login. Instead of leaving it in that state we chose to disable it entirely until a fix could be implemented out of a desire to not go overboard. We do genuinely want the best experience for you that we can possibly deliver.

The current revision of that fix limits the window to open once per character. We're looking into options to ensure that it instead triggers once per account.

3.4 introduced some pretty amazing features and content, and we thank you all so much for your continued support, or at the very least, your kind tolerance of the occasional thing that helps make sure we're always able to get you the biggest, best, free updates as often as we possibly can.

Dear Trion employees, thank you for understanding our frustrations with the horrible advertisement for a game, inside said game that we can't avoid at least once every day when trying to play said game.

We are always happy to see new ideas, places and "features" from you, and while we understand that not 100% of you will understand or agree with us, we appreciate that you are at the very least standing up to your choices.

Please understand that many of us are not interested in having our gaming experiences grinding to a halt before we even get started, much like I assume the people working at Trion wouldn't want to have to walk past a well off man following them and begging for money or peddling things you didn't want nor need every day they arrived at work.

Even at 20 hour intervals I don't care what's in your store, as I will go look for information if it had an interest.
Many of us have other sources of information to let us know if/when an event is going on, and those of us who do would rather like to get rid of obnoxious pop-up adverts, particularly in a game we play in our free time.

    Thank you for your time.

You can't disable it. Statistics show that the more exposure to advertising the consumer experiences the higher frequency they have to spend their money on the product advertised. Why would they implement a change that in theory would increase player enjoyment and reduce potential revenue? Duh!

People playing multiple alts really shouldn't see it every time they relog. I can imagine that must be annoying. I would get angry myself. Also, if you really want to make it useful, please include some actual game information, not just store.

I was SO outraged, that I had to click that window closed... for me it was an indication that the Rapture is almost upon us. This was a stark reminder to us all... it won't be long, Repent!

    I Rift, therefore I am.

Like some people have already suggested..

Patrons should get a tick-box to disable the popups.

Well, I haven't seen this yet since I'm waiting for Glyph to update, but if all of this is true, I'm sadly disappointed.

    @Ocho

I was one of your beta testers. There since launch day, I have a gritty kitty to prove it, and other than this past year, where I've been mourning my dad (who ALSO played and supported RIFT before he passed away), I was on almost every day. To see that you are, slowly but surely, becoming a Perfect World clone disappoints and depresses me. I tried ArcheAge for a few months when it came out. I left it for the same sort of stuff going on (I know that you're just 'hosting' the game, but still...)

I filled out a survey a month ago about how I felt. On that, I said 'I wish Trion would make more games of their own rather than host other people's games'. Yeah, Defiant was a mess of a launch, but you gave up too soon.

And now you're starting to imitate games from across the Pacific.

I got another survey this past week because I'd gone 'missing'. I didn't answer because it was just real life stuff interfering (new job, real life stuff, etc), but knowing this now, here's what I would have said:

Stop trying to be Perfect World.

LISTEN to your players! We're the ones that will make or break you. We're also the ones that have the real pulse of what people want, not the words on your paper, a marketing company chart, or anything else like that. ASK THE PEOPLE PLAYING THE GAME AND LISTEN TO THEM. 'It looks good on paper' should say it all. It's on paper, not what's actually happening. What's actually happening is no where near as neat and pretty as you think it is if this is what you're doing.

I'm of two minds about this development. The pop up window may not bug me, but it will make me wonder if RIFT is going to turn into an ArcheAge/Perfect World clone, and if it does, that will be the death knell for me.

I do think there should be an option to at the very least shrink the window if it's that in your face. Give the option to have a blinking icon to press if you want to see it rather than a huge splash page of a window. Or yes, put in an option to buy an 'add free' experience. Marketing is still convinced that forcing 'buy buy buy' down people's throats and yet most people, if you just ask them, will tell you they're LESS likely to buy from an aggressive vendor. Because no one likes being cornered into getting something they don't want.

I'm one of those consumers. The more someone tries to sell me something by going LOOK AT MEEEEE!!!! DON'T YOU WANT THIS?!' My immediate reaction is NOT 'ooooh, let me see it!'. It's 'Get that **** out of my **** face!'. (Yes, I edited myself. ;) )

And I tend to avoid the vendor after that unless I absolutely must have something that they have that no one else does. And I'm willing to bet everyone telling you 'no' would have the same reaction.

I know you guys need income to keep hosting games (that's why my patron status is STILL intact after all this time). This isn't the way to do it. Not if you want a stable population, and happy players. This? This won't provide either. Reconsider your money making options. Or at least how the window is handled.

Not a big fan of the huge Ad window but as it takes me just a microsecond to hit the Esc key when i log in, it's actually wasted on me as i don't even see it, thus defeating the purpose of even having it as everyone will just press Esc

    1 / day / account / cluster would be acceptable, I guess.

It would also be a better place for the message of the day (than where it is now) and other important known issues and such.
