Rehashed, reskinned content =/= Exciting new contentRetired from Rift thanks to Square E getting their stuff together
Just loved this zone...
As a defiant I went there many times just for the gothic atmosphere and beauty of this zone.
I rolled a guardian just to do these werewolf-witch stories quests and enjoy being there... Had to stop before the changes were made... Now I'm afraid to log on this toon and see the magic gone.
Why change a zone that had so unique feeling?
Has anyone got any pics to show the difference? I havent got Rift installed on this PC (I'm away for a bit, and cant really look till I get back a week-ish from now) but Gloamwood used to be one of my favourite zones. It was wonderfully atmospheric. If that's gone, that'll be a huge disappointment.
I just stood in the exact same location as I did on the 2nd August 2011 and compared with a current screen shot and to be honest it is very hard to notice the difference. I stood in front of the doorway at Furtho Dragmor's place up the tree. What seems to be slightly different is the sensation of moonlight, albeit there is no moon. The character feels brighter and the shadows are sharper cast onto buildings. Also there is less green in the sky. Personally, I didn't notice any difference, other than it felt sharper and the lighting appears more defined. I have a feeling we just lost a bit of the mist.
If you look from the Marsh House in Silverwood across the marsh you can sometimes see the area without the mist. I wish the mist would clear sometimes from areas.
Maybe if there was a better feel of night and day then Gloamwood could appear darker sometimes. It still has the same atmosphere... to be honest. Memory is just playing tricks on you.
' The might of death flows within me '... ' Regulos commends your faithfullness, Hag. Accept his dark gift '
Gloamwood is classic in truth... the story just flows so wonderfully. But you do have to read the lines to understand what is happening. And if you are prepared to do so you get a wonderful thread going with Alsbeth, who although suffers from foolish and stupid accomplisses, never lets it get to her. I love her line in Scarlet when she retorts having lost her boss mob ' ...no matter '. Secretly she admires your efforts and is never in the mood to finish you off herself. Great character.
I wonder why it was changed? Perhaps it's another way for Rift to distance itself from that "other MMO," which also has a dark and dreary zone named...wait for it...Duskwood!
Or perhaps Blizzard lightened up their gloomy zone. That would explain some things also...
Next we'll hear Seratos got too many complaints for being psychologically too dark, so we'll end up questing for rainbows and lollypops to cheer up the Shapers.
I'd love for a dev to pop in and maybe give us an idea why it was changed- not demanding that or feeling entitled to that, mind you.

"The next time Jonus tries to kiss the bartender, he'll get a reaction."
Have to agree, loved it more dark and gloomy. The best part of Gloamwood is climbing the trees to get artifacts!
I'd have rather they made it even darker the deeper you go, thrown some more fog in places, more shadows and added more trees to make it dense and overgrown like real woods. Right now it looks like some kind of lame park..
Feedback and data folks - that is what drove the change.
However, what about people who are unhappy with this change? Lore-wise this doesn't make sense, since it's supposed to be dark and gloomy place, and even the guards still carry torches with them, and it's sunny.
I'd really appreciate if a developer told me how important is lore in Rift. All I heard was nerf this, buff that, reduced cost this, new gear that. But I've never read a post from a developer saying is lore important to them. Is lore just randomly intergrated into gameplay, or does gameplay fit the lore?
It seems we'll now have factionless PvP. I couldn't care less about if I'll get that PvP gear or if I'll ''pwn someone with my mad skillz''. All I care about is lore. When a Defiant Centurion hires me to battle guardians at Port Scion, and I'm grouped with Guardians too, what's the explanation for that?
Can someone please help me with this? Many thanks!
This reminds me when took away from the water sky from the Waves of Madness event for some reason like "it was making people too depressed". It just kind of looks like there's a serious pandering to the nervous nellies of the population.
This also makes me think about Seratos and especially Morban. Upper Morban with the deserted houses and fog mechanic gets downright creepy. My best moments while leveling was definitely questing in that area. I just hope this doesn't become a trend of let's change every environment that isn't happy and perky like Hailol. Happy and perky is fine, it just can't be everywhere.
In my opinion, Rift's best team is by far the team that pulls off the amazing art and environments in the game. Anything that restricts their ability to produce the quality content we've seen so far from them makes me extremely wary.
Alright this all gets me very concerned now, since Trion seems to sacrifice a lot of lore for ''convenience/gameplay''. Now I'll have to create a separate topic about this and hope to get a dev response on it.
